Work Location: One South Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA
Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt – Full Time, up to three years. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
Working closely with the Chief of Staff and Division Director, the Transportation Planner IV will use their well-honed strategic thinking, communications abilities and knowledgeable insights to guide the Division’s approach to working through complex issues and relationships with stakeholders, customers and the public.
This position will be responsible for two core functions: 1) staffing Division Director interactions with the Board of Supervisors and other elected officials; and 2) ensuring implementation of the Agency’s Public Outreach and Engagement Team Strategy for all Division projects and programs. The position will require close coordination with the Government Affairs and Communications Divisions.
• Supports the Division Director's engagement with the Board of Supervisors (BOS) and other local elected officials by staffing the Division Director in meetings with elected officials and tracking board requests related to Division projects.
• Coordinates with Division staff on response to BOS requests to ensure timely and thorough follow up.
• Coordinates with the Government Affairs Division on division communication with BOS members.
• In consultation with the Communications Division, directs the implementation of the Public Outreach and Engagement Team Strategy (POETs), including developing protocols, supporting development of high quality communications plans, and ensuring compliance with the SFMTA’s Public Outreach Notifications Standards for Division staff.
• Identifies strategies and opportunities to communicate Division’s accomplishments and contributions to employees and the public, working closely with Communications staff.
• Establishes policies and standards that improve internal communications within the division and use of agency-wide communications resources; ensures consistent use of SFMTA brand standards and marks.
• Provides support to Division Chief of Staff on a variety of special projects such as but not limited to the annual MTAB workshop, emerging mobility-related planning and other transportation planning initiatives.
• Provides support to Division managers, as needed, for special events, special agency initiatives, bike/walk tour logistics and other similar activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university preferably in transportation, mass transit planning or other closely related field; AND six (6) years of transit planning and/or transportation planning experience; OR
2. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Transportation, Transportation Engineering, Public Administration or other closely related field; AND four (4) years of transit planning and/or transportation experience.
1. Additional transit planning and/or transportation planning experience beyond the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for year basis.
2. Additional post-graduate education as described in item 2 of the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 semester units/45 quarter units equal one (1) year of experience).
