5502 PROJECT MANAGER I - CAPITAL PROJECT MANAGER
Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt. In accordance with San Francisco Charter Section 10.104, exempt employees serve at the discretion of the appointing authority. The qualified applicant pool resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill vacancies at various locations within DPH. The anticipated duration of this exempt appointment is up to thirty-six (36) months.
Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is accepting applications for two (2) full-time positions in class 5502 Project Manager I to function as Capital Project Managers.
Under administrative direction, the 5502 Project Manager I - Capital Project Manager plans, organizes, directs and controls all or part of a highly complex architectural or information systems project from concept through design and construction to close out of the project contract.
In 2016, a bond ($222 million) was approved to fund various improvements at ZSFG. A majority of the bond will go toward renovating ZSFG’s Building 5. This is critical to complete our vision of the campus, now that the new acute care hospital has opened. Renovations will allow us to create an ambulatory care center for outpatient clinics, psychiatric emergency and inpatient services, skilled nursing, and other services. Bond funded capital improvements will include:
Expanded urgent care facilities
Primary care and specialty care clinic relocations
Expansion of psychiatric services
Earthquake safety improvements
Modernized fire response systems
Information Technology (IT) infrastructure improvements
Building electrical and mechanical systems improvements

Schedule/Shift: Typically Monday - Friday, Day shift. May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays on rare occasion.
The 5502 Project Manager I - Capital Project Manager is responsible for healthcare capital projects exceeding $1 million and performs the following essential duties:
plans project design and system architecture/infrastructure;
develops and implements strategic and change management planning;
directs or manages the development of technical and functional requirements;
selects and negotiates with software vendors and/or integration partners;
coordinates the work of a multi-disciplinary staff which may cross more than one department, technical, and functional areas;
manages the performance of project contractors;
develops training plans for project staff during development and for all users at implementation;
manages eventual deployment of the new system;
plans, organizes, and directs all of the work in support of multiple relocation and renovation projects in Building 5 at the ZSFG campus;
assesses existing space on campus, infrastructure requirements, requirements for future expansion, and impacts to building systems;
coordinates with multiple stakeholders, including facility services, IT department, applications, clinical and support services departments, capital projects office, etc. on decision-making and design recommendations; and
works with design consultants and architects.
The 5502 Project Manager I - Capital Project Managers perform other related duties as required.
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, planning, or landscape architecture and four (4) years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience; OR
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in another field and six (6) years of responsible experience in a field directly related to the project; OR
- Eight (8) years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to the project; OR
- Possession of California registration as professional engineer or architect.
One (1) year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a forty (40) hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Experience related to healthcare facilities.
- Experience with Building electrical and mechanical systems.
- Experience with IT systems and power/data requirements.
- Experience with alternative project delivery, including design-build project delivery.
- Experience delivering major capital projects in urban and/or suburban locations with complex approval processes.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
- Ability to build team and consensus among different stakeholders with various interests.
- Experience working on OSHPD-permitted projects.
