APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt: This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer, and the duration of the position shall not exceed 24 months.

LOCATION: 30 Van Ness, San Francisco, CA
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Public Health Primary Care’s Care Experience Unit is accepting applications for one (1) part-time position in class 9924 Public Service Aide as a Performance Improvement Project Assistant Trainee.
The Performance Improvement Project Assistant trainee will have hands-on experience in a variety of healthcare settings so that they can directly observe and understand the changing technological and service needs of health systems. Trainee will develop skills for professionals engaging in the practice of public health through exposure and training in the following activities:
· Conduct patient outreach (e.g. participate in health center community fairs, make calls to patients who missed appointments).
· Perform data management tasks and use basic formulas to create tables and graphs.
· Plan, monitor and disseminate project communications (e.g. emails, oral presentations) in a timely manner.
· Support activities to document patient "care experience" stories to improve health system.
· Assist with Service Excellence initiatives (e.g. patient surveys, mystery shopper activities).
· Assist team members with activities related to community engagement and staff satisfaction.
Trainees will attend knowledge-based seminars conducted by agency staff in the following areas:
· Health disparities and community health: understand effects of geography, gender, race and ethnicity on health outcomes - presented by the Primary Care Director of Quality Improvement.
· Patient Experience Surveys: learn about the different modes of surveys in health care such as Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), Home Health, Pediatrics. Understand benefits and drawbacks to each. Use case studies to determine how best to use and share survey outcomes.
· Quality Improvement 101: presented by the Medical Director for Quality Improvement. Hands-on experience with improvement tools (e.g. priority matrix, cause and effect diagrams, Lean Management Systems) to make recommendations to improve primary care services.
Trainees will use this information to return to the clinics to run reports that will be analyzed to determine how to improve the health care services with the Department of Public Health Ambulatory Care Services.
The Public Service Aide, Performance Improvement Project Assistant Trainee, also performs other related duties.
NOTE: The qualified applicant pool may be used to fill other positions located at different locations in the next six months.
1. Current enrollment as a Freshman or Sophomore in a health care or health care related program at an accredited college or university; AND
2. Three (3) months* (equivalent to 500 hours) of verifiable experience working or volunteering in a health setting.
*Note: One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
