Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV). Temporary Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications for a full time temporary provisional position in class 2587 Health Worker 3. The current position is located at the Chinatown North Beach Mental Health Services and the work shift is Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. This position requires bilingual proficiency in Cantonese and English.
The applicant pool resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future TPV vacancies in this class at other locations within DPH.
Under general supervision of the Clinic Director/designee, the Health Worker 3 will provide direct individual/group face to face or telehealth services to individuals with various psychiatric conditions and co-occurring disorders in a specialty mental health setting. The essential duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in assessing mental health conditions of adult/older adult clients and in treatment planning, in conjunction with professional staff;
- Assists in planning and coordination of groups/activities for the Wellness and Recovery Program Facilitate Wellness and Recovery groups/activities;
- Assists with individual and group counseling, family intervention, and case management, under the supervision of professional staff. Services may be provided at the clinic, off site and/or telehealth;
- May perform crisis intervention;
- May assist in the planning, coordination, and evaluation of Integrated Health Home activities;
- Provides community education and information about mental health services to the Asian community;
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary staff and other service providers; and
- Maintains up-to-date clinical records and other necessary documentation.
The 2587 Health Worker 3 performs other duties as required/assigned.
Two (2) years of verifiable experience within the last five (5) years, working with a culturally diverse population performing a combination of at least two (2) of the following duties: Serving as a liaison between targeted communities and healthcare agencies; providing culturally appropriate health education/information and outreach to targeted populations; providing referral and follow up services or otherwise coordinating care; providing informal counseling, social support and advocacy to targeted populations; escorting and transporting clients; providing courier /dispatcher functions; performing pre-clinical examinations of vital statistics, such as measuring a patient’s weight, height, temperature and blood pressure; AND
2. Bilingual proficiency in English and Cantonese

Possession of a Community Health Worker Certificate from City College of San Francisco can substitute for 6 months of experience for Minimum Qualification # 1.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Language Proficiency Exam
Candidates deemed qualified who meet the special condition target language must pass a departmentally approved language proficiency exam prior to appointment. Only those eligible candidates who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for the bilingual position.
