2920 MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER

Appointment Type:  Temporary Provisional (TPV). A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) Medical Social Services Department is accepting applications for one (1) full time TPV position in class 2920 Medical Social Worker. This position requires SPANISH bilingual proficiency.

The hospital operates on a 24-hour, 7 day per week basis and some Department of Public Health (DPH) centers/clinics and Department of Aging and Adults (DAAS) are open evenings, nights, and weekends and/or holidays.

Shift(s):  The basic work week is Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holiday shifts may be required.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under direction, the Medical Social Worker provides comprehensive medical social service to clients and their families. Depending on the position, location duties may vary. The essential job functions include:

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams;
  • Evaluates social, emotional and physical needs of clients;
  • Conducts mandatory reporting activities (CPS, APS, elder abuse reports);
  • Prepares records to document case activity;
  • Provides supportive counseling and crisis intervention as needed;
  • Interviews clients, their families and/or significant others to obtain intake information;
  • Provides discharge planning and/or service coordination and linkage by analyzing client needs; Interprets medical information to reinforce or clarify medical assessments;
  • Provides educational information by explaining health issues such as substance abuse, HIV, prenatal care or nutrition;
  • Acts as a resource for other staff by providing training and consulting on psychosocial issues to enhance treatment of clients;
  • Performs outreach and case finding to identify potential clients with psychosocial needs;
  • Integrates services or programs to increase efficiencies;
  • Reviews service referral request inquiries received by phone or computer system; and
  • Performs community outreach and case finding, representing the organization at various community events. 

The Medical Social Worker performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE); AND
  2. Six (6) months (1000 hours) of social work experience in a health care setting. This experience may be gained from supervised field placement during the Master's in Social Work (MSW) program or from post-graduate social work experience; AND
  3. Spanish Bilingual Proficiency

Selection Procedures

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applicants in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview. Applicants meeting the minimum requirements are not guaranteed advancement in the selection process.

Conviction History

As a selected candidate for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a selected candidate. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing. Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a FaceFitting Respirator.
