The Library is now accepting applications for one (1) full-time Temporary Provisional position at our Engineering Office, Facilities Division in Class 7334 Stationary Engineer.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, Stationary Engineer operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and auxiliary plant machinery and equipment in a large complex or multi-faceted facility. Ensures that all equipment, machinery and systems are functioning normally and safely, and complies with all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Essential duties of the position include:
• Operates, maintains and repairs a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and power generating equipment in a large complex or multi-faceted facility;
• Inspects and tests machinery and equipment, fire prevention equipment, water storage and multiple distribution systems, high pressure zones, wood and steel storage tanks, pumps and relief valves, and samples of water;
• Makes entries and keep records on shift operation;
• Receives, records and stores large amounts of treatment chemicals and may handle hazardous chemicals in confined or enclosed areas; must be capable of safely and properly handling chemical spills; may also include handling and treatment of industrial or hazardous waste;
• Contacts, communicates and is required to deal with contractors, building tenants and/or the general public in order to be able to discharge assigned duties;
• Maintains keys, communications equipment, and security (in the absence of Security Personnel). As part of an emergency response team, recognizes, evaluates, and responds to potentially hazardous situations;
• Performs control tests on water samples; under supervision, conducts water analysis and regulates treatment chemical dosages; performs boiler water and cooling tower chemical tests;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Nature of the work:
Essential Functions require considerable physical effort in the maintenance, repair and operation of plant machinery and equipment; the ability to lift heavy objects; exposure to working conditions where minor abrasions, bruises and burns may be encountered; occasional disagreeable work inside close and dirty spaces.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.


Experience:
Four (4) years of verified journey-level stationary engineer experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of mechanical and electrical pumping, heating, air conditioning, ventilating and related plant machinery used in a government establishment, hospital, industrial, production or commercial building. AND

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License,
AND 

Possession at time of hire a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Substitution:
Any of the following may be substituted for the required experience:
• Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program
• Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in engineering or technology
• Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any (unrestricted) horsepower


Note:
One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT:
Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by Stationary Engineers Local 39, are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive positions for six months after the date of the positive test.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION:
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential function of this job.

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate qualifications of candidates. Only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Note: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all of the steps in the selection process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Provisional Appointments
When a department needs to fill a vacancy that is covered by the civil service process, but no applicant pool of eligible employees is available, departments are allowed to hire Provisional (or temporary) employees. Provisional employees may not receive the same benefits as permanent employees and they may be "bumped" or laid off in favor of a permanent employee.

In order for a provisional appointee to be able to retain his or her job, he or she must apply to compete for a permanent civil service appointment when the job announcement is issued. They then must go through the permanent civil service job application process and need to be successful in a permanent civil service examination process to be considered for a permanent appointment. Provisional employees are not guaranteed permanent selection.


Conviction History
