Under administrative direction, participates in the administration and supervision of assigned portions of the County law enforcement and Coroner functions and provides senior management oversight of assigned functions within the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator’s Office; and does related or other work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The class of Assistant Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator is a Sheriff’s Office position, at-will class that is exempt from the San Joaquin County Civil Service system, and is responsible to the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator, through the Undersheriff serving at the pleasure of the Sheriff. The incumbent interfaces extensively with external agencies and is responsible for leading, managing, directing and administering assigned budgets, functions and activities, while ensuring their compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as the policies established by the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator, for the administration of the specified functional area of the office.
TYPICAL DUTIES

Acts as administrative head of the department in the absence of the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator and Undersheriff, as designated by the Sheriff or Undersheriff.
Plans, supervises and directs assigned department administrative and custody functions; establishes standards of work and operating procedures; submits operation reports.
Advises and assists in the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator and Undersheriff in forming, revising and implementing departmental policy and procedures.
Participates in selecting personnel for promotion and new hire; reviews applications and conducts interviews.
Assists in the preparation and monitoring of departmental annual budget.
Directs research and planning regarding department organization, facilities, training, systems, grants and other projects as assigned.
Maintains liaison with other law enforcement agencies, County departments and appropriate public and private groups.
Makes public appearances to explain departmental policies, procedures and to promote public relations.
Answers correspondence, prepares reports and conducts special studies.
Directs the effective use of technology in assigned areas to improve systems and processes.
May assume field command in cases of major crimes, riots, or disasters.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Three years performing advanced command responsibilities at a level equivalent to or higher than the class of Lieutenant in San Joaquin County service.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of valid California driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
Must possess an Advanced Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training;
Must meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the California Government Code;
Must pass a background investigation conducted by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office; and
Must meet the physical standards established for the class.
