Under administrative direction, participates in the administration and supervision of the Custody Division and provides senior management oversight of County jail and related correctional facilities and functions of assigned portions of the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator’s Office; and does related or other work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The class of Correctional Assistant Sheriff is a Sheriff’s Office position, at-will class that is exempt from the San Joaquin County Civil Service system, and is responsible to the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator, through the Undersheriff serving at the pleasure of the Sheriff. The incumbent interfaces extensively with external agencies and is responsible for leading, managing, directing and administering assigned budgets, functions and activities, while ensuring their compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as the policies established by the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator, for the administration of the specified functional area of the office.
TYPICAL DUTIES

Plans Supervises and directs custody functions; establishes standards of work and operating procedures; submits operational reposts.
Advises and assists the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator and Undersheriff in forming, revising and implementing policy and procedures.
Participates in selecting personnel for promotion and new hire; reviews applications and conducts interviews.
Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget.
Directs research and planning regarding department organization, facilities, training, systems, grants and other projects as assigned.
Maintains liaison with other law enforcement/Correctional agencies, county departments and appropriate public and private groups.
Makes public appearances to explain departmental policies, procedures and to promote public relations.
Answers correspondence, prepares reports and conducts special studies.
Directs the effective use of technology in assigned areas to improve systems and processes.
May assume command of the Custody Division in cases of major crimes, riots or disasters.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Three years performing advanced command responsibilities in a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, or Corrections Standards Authority Standards for Training and Corrections (STC) participating detention facility, at a level equivalent to or higher than the class of Correctional Lieutenant in San Joaquin County service.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of valid California driver’s license.
Special Requirements
1) Must possess a valid Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Correctional Officer Core Course certificate;
2) Must meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the California Government Code;
3) Must successfully have completed a regular course in Powers of Arrest and Seizure (PC 832) approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST);
4) Must pass a background investigation conducted by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office; and
5) Must meet the physical standards established for the class.
