DEFINITION

Under direction, performs skilled building maintenance and repair work; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the third level class in the Crafts Worker series. An employee in this class independently performs a variety of skilled tasks related to building construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair. This class differs from that of Crafts Worker II in that an employee of the latter class functions at the sub-journey level performing semi-skilled tasks and assisting in skilled work. This class differs from that of Crafts Worker IV in that an employee of the latter class is a working supervisor.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, metal work, welding, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
  • Pours concrete, hangs doors, lays flooring, installs partitions and drop ceilings; repairs door closures, furniture and roofing; performs general carpentry work.
  • Performs general plumbing repair; installs water and gas lines, lavatories and faucets; unplugs sewers and drains.
  • Installs and replaces light fixtures, bulbs, ballasts and fuses; installs conduit, electrical wiring, switches and outlets.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs on locks, appliances, automotive equipment, boilers, heating and ventilating, and related mechanical devices.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of motorized tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Reads, interprets and works from sketches, diagrams, or simple blueprints; forecasts material needs and orders supplies; maintains records; prepares reports.
  • May lead other workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I 
Experience: Two years of journey level experience in at least one of the building trades. 

OR II 
Experience: Four years as a Crafts Worker II in San Joaquin County Service. 

License: Possession of valid California driver’s license. 

Special Requirement: Two years of journey level experience in one of the following building trades may be required for assignment or continued assignment to specific departments: Painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC).

KNOWLEDGE

Methods and practices, tools and materials, safety precautions and occupational hazards of the building maintenance trades.

ABILITY

Lead a small group of semi-skilled or unskilled workers; prepare and work from sketches or plans for construction, renovation and maintenance of buildings and equipment; make accurate estimates of time and material required for repair and maintenance work; use tools employed in the building trades; keep records and prepare reports; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
