Under direction, supervises and participates in skilled building maintenance and repair work, and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the working supervisory level in the Crafts Worker series. An employee in this class supervises a crew of Crafts Workers and independently performs a variety of skilled tasks related to building construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair. This class differs from that of Crafts Worker III in that an employee of the latter class functions at the journey level without full supervisory responsibilities.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, coordinates and supervises the work of a group of employees engaged in the construction, renovation and maintenance of County buildings, grounds and equipment; estimates labor and material costs; orders necessary supplies.
Participates in the selection of staff; assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of Crafts Workers; trains and counsels staff.
Supervises and participates in skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, metal work, welding, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
Prepares working sketches, and diagrams; reads, interprets and works from sketches, diagrams, or simple blueprints; maintains records and prepares reports.
Pours concrete, hangs doors, lays flooring, installs partitions and drop ceilings; repairs door closers, furniture and roofing; performs general carpentry work.
Operates and maintains a variety of motorized tools, equipment and vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: Four years of journey level experience in at least one of the building trades.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Two years of experience as a Crafts Worker III in San Joaquin County Service.
AND
License: Possession of valid California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE
Methods and practices, tools and materials safety precautions and occupational hazards of the supervisory methods and techniques.
ABILITY
Plan, assign, instruct and supervise the work of a group of journey and sub-journey level workers; prepare and work from sketches or plans for construction, renovation, and maintenance of buildings and equipment; make accurate estimates of time and material required for repair and maintenance work; use tools employed in the building trades; keep records and prepare reports; evaluate the work and performance of subordinates; express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
