Under general supervision performs skilled welding and metalworking; may perform rough carpentry, concrete, and general construction work; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class are responsible for performing a broad range of skilled welding, fabrication and metal working operations as required by the Public Works Department. The work assignment determines the emphasis of an incumbent’s duties. The focus may be on the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and other mechanical equipment in a shop setting. In a different assignment, incumbents may work with metal, wood and concrete materials in a field situation to fabricate and repair facilities and structures related to flood control systems while also performing general repair and maintenance of heavy trucks and road construction equipment. Considerable independence is exercised in the determination of methods, procedures and materials to use in accomplishing specific work assignments.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Repairs and fabricates metal components of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers and other related automotive and construction equipment; may fabricate, repair, and install pipe gates, fences, grates and metal components of channel maintenance structures, tools and equipment.
Performs electric arc, oxy/acetylene and wire feed welding; plans and lays out jobs; determines work to be done and tools required; makes time and materials estimates; selects appropriate heat and electrodes for welding and joins metals using standard welding equipment; may prepare designs from standard specifications; may perform work according to basic plans and blueprints.
Preheats, cleans, lays out, cuts and fits metal components using acetylene torch, power drills, power saws, grinders, threaders, bending machines, and related power machinery; forges, tempers, hardens, sharpens and fashions chains, drills, cutters, and other tools and equipment; hardfaces shovel teeth, grader blades, and other equipment.
May plan and build rough carpentry and concrete projects, performing related maintenance and repairs as needed; may paint completed structures.
May assist in general mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks and other road/channel maintenance construction equipment/tools; may assist mechanics working on engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, brake, drive and related systems; may install traffic signs, pavement symbols and construction signs and barricades; may load and transport construction materials.
Keeps records and prepares paperwork relating to job activities.
May lead and train other staff, including AWP workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
Experience: Three years journey level experience in the welding trade.
KNOWLEDGE
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the welding trade; properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and the practices, procedures, materials, tools and equipment used in their cutting, bending, hardening and joining; general methods, tools and materials used in rough carpentry and concrete work; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trade.
ABILITY
Follow oral and written instructions; read and prepare sketches, diagrams and models; work independently; operate tools and equipment common to the welding trade; train and lead workers of lesser skill and experience; keep records of work performed; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors, and others.
