Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of a high capacity traffic striping machine; acts as lead worker of a traffic striping crew; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the second level in the Traffic Striper Operator series. An incumbent in this class exercises some independent judgment in manipulating complex controls and switches necessary to operate the traffic striping painting controls, and in leading and directing the work of the traffic striping crew.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, assigns, and directs the work of a traffic striping crew; checks work being performed for quality and conformance with work specifications and instructions; trains employees in various phases of traffic striping work and in the operation of the traffic striping equipment.
Makes estimates of time and material needed to complete proposed or assigned work projects; operates paint delivery system and accessory equipment in the striping and marking of county roads; operates highway paint striping truck; informs painting systems operator of road and traffic conditions and changes in pre-marked striping symbols.
Measures roadways and intersections and pre-marks for placement of painted lines; places traffic-warning devices; directs and controls traffic on affected roads.
Makes routine maintenance, repairs, and changes to traffic striping systems and related vehicles and equipment; disassembles, cleans, and assembles painting equipment on striping vehicles, such as spray guns, shrouds on paint sprayers, screens paint tanks, valves and piping.
Prepares and maintains written records and reports of work completed and materials used; may assist other members of the traffic Division in the installation and painting of traffic control devices.
May install and maintain traffic signs and pavement legends and symbols, and may operate equipment and perform light to heavy physical labor in the construction and maintenance of County roads.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: One-year experience as a Traffic Striper Operator I in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Three years of experience in the construction, installation, or painting of traffic control devices, one year of which must have been in the use and operation of spray painting equipment.
AND
License: Possession of a valid Class B California driver’s license, with tanker endorsement.
KNOWLEDGE
Materials, methods and techniques used in traffic striping; traffic control devices and their functions; traffic control standards, and rules and regulations pertinent to the operation of motor vehicles; use and maintenance of spray painting equipment and accessories; occupational hazards involved in traffic control work; basic mathematics; safety precautions necessary for protection of employees, equipment and the public; basic computers and modern office automation technology, including pertinent software.
ABILITY
Plan, organize, direct and train subordinate employees; manipulate and operate controls of traffic striping equipment; perform routine mechanical maintenance work; perform basic computations in estimating labor and materials required for a job; operate computers and related software; understand and follow oral and written directions; perform moderately heavy manual labor; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; prepare and maintain routine written records and reports.
