Under immediate supervision, performs limited semi-skilled work in the control and eradication of noxious weeds, insects and vertebrate pests; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Pest Abatement Operator series. Employees in this class learn to apply herbicides, insecticides and rodenticides in the noxious week, insect and vertebrate pest control programs.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Assists in spraying weeds and trees along County roads and on county right-of-way and private properties as part of the week control, eradication and sterilization programs.
Assists in placing various toxicants and bird traps on county rights-of-way and private properties as part of the vertebrates pest control program.
Learns to spray and inject trees on County rights-of-way and easements to control insects and diseases.
Assists in mixing, bagging, labeling, and storing various herbicides, insecticides, and rodenticides; assists in building and repairing bird and rodent traps and other equipment.
Learns to answer questions from the public concerning the use and safety of pest control materials.
Performs a variety of maintenance duties for the Agriculture Department.
Learns to operate and maintain pest control equipment including trucks, tractors, tank trailers, spray rigs, and weed and rodent guns. Learns to use such equipment as the arc welders, acetylene torch, metal lathe, and spray painting equipment.
Maintains records of work performed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE
Characteristics of certain weed, insects and vertebrate pests; the operation of various types of spray equipment.
ABILITY
Follow oral and written directions; operate and maintain application equipment; work effectively with the public; maintain routine records.
