Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of semi-skilled duties pertaining to lubrication and other types of routine maintenance work on automobiles, trucks, and other light equipment; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the second-level class in the Equipment Service Worker series. Incumbents in this class are responsible for performing a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks that involve lubricating, servicing, and making minor repairs and adjustments to automobiles, trucks, and other light equipment in the fleet shop.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Greases automobiles, trucks, and other light equipment.
Checks and replenishes oil levels in crankcases, transmissions, differentials and master cylinders.
Checks general conditions of horns, batteries, lights, tires, windshield wipers and other related automotive equipment; makes minor repairs and adjustments such as replacing, batteries and wipers; repairs and replaces tires; reports major mechanical problems to supervisor.
Steam cleans engines and related equipment.
Assists mechanics by performing support tasks as assigned.
Assigns motor pool vehicles to authorized personnel; services vehicles with gas, oil and water; parks vehicles.
Picks up and delivers automobiles and trucks.
Prepares routine records and reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: Two years as an Equipment Service Worker I in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Two years in the routine servicing and lubrication of automobiles or light trucks.
AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Materials, equipment and methods used in lubricating and servicing automobiles and trucks; general nomenclature and functioning of trucks and automotive equipment.
ABILITY
Lubricate, service and make minor repairs on automobiles and trucks; keep routine records; follow oral and written directions; operate automobiles and trucks; perform heavy manual labor; work effectively with others.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility – frequent standing and walking; occasional pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, twisting, climbing, kneeling, squatting; Lifting/Carrying – frequently 50 pounds or less; occasionally 51 – 70 pounds; Dexterity – frequent handling, reaching, grasping, and fingering; Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing and speaking normal speech and speaking loudly over equipment noise; occasional hearing/talking on a radio; Visual – frequent use of good overall vision, at normal or corrected to normal acuity; frequent use of depth perception and peripheral vision; occasional reading and close-up work; Environmental – frequent exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, and odors; occasional exposure to varied weather conditions or working with hazardous materials; Emotional/Psychological – frequent concentration and working independently; Special Requirements – occasional working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency call-back; occasional travel.
