Under direction, performs difficult, semi-skilled equipment servicing duties, including those pertaining to heavy road construction equipment and heavy trucks; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

This is the advanced-level class in the Equipment Service Worker series.  Incumbents in this class are responsible for performing difficult non-mechanic equipment servicing duties, such as lubricating and providing general mechanical servicing for heavy road construction equipment, draw bridges, ferries and other equipment, at the work site, in the garage, or in the lube room.

• Lubricates heavy road construction equipment such as graders, bulldozers, rollers, compactors, tractors and backhoes, as well as other heavy mechanical equipment such as mowers, generators and compressors; checks oil levels; adds or replaces oil; monitors lubricant needs. 
• Services heavy road construction equipment; inspects and replaces air, fuel and oil filters; inspects and maintains batteries; checks for general mechanical problems; makes minor adjustments and repairs, or reports the need for repairs. 
• Starts, operates, and moves equipment as necessary. 
• Schedules equipment for service by consulting service records and manuals, or responding to requests of Foreman and Equipment Operators; maintains records of service performed; projects future service needs. 
• Regularly inspects, lubricates and makes minor adjustments on mechanical parts of drawbridges and cable fixed ferries; maintains equipment service and inspection records. 
• Performs service at work sites where equipment is being operated; drives a service truck to the work sites; stocks the truck with necessary parts, tools and equipment. 
• Maintains supply inventory records.

Tools, equipment, materials and practices used in servicing light, medium and heavy road construction equipment; basic operating principles and mechanical functioning of road construction equipment; general mechanical principles.

Perform heavy manual labor and work under adverse weather conditions; prepare and maintain basic service and inspection records and reports; follow oral and written directions; read and understand service manuals and related written material; work effectively with other employees.

Mobility – frequent standing and walking; occasional pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, twisting, climbing, kneeling, squatting; Lifting/Carrying – frequently 50 pounds or less; occasionally 51 – 70 pounds; Dexterity – frequent handling, reaching, grasping, and fingering; Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing and speaking normal speech and speaking loudly over equipment noise; occasional hearing/talking on a radio; Visual – frequent use of good overall vision, at normal or corrected to normal acuity; frequent use of depth perception and peripheral vision; occasional reading and close-up work; Environmental – frequent exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, and odors; occasional exposure to varied weather conditions or working with hazardous materials; Emotional/Psychological – frequent concentration and working independently; Special Requirements – occasional working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency call-back; occasional travel.
