Under general direction, supervises the maintenance work of the Motor Pool Division of the County Garage; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the Shop Superintendent in the daily operation of the County Garage by supervising the maintenance and repair of County automobiles and trucks.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Assigns, supervises and evaluates the work of Mechanics involved in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other motorized equipment.
Inspects equipment to determine needed repairs; prepares work orders; estimates time and material needed to complete job; assists mechanics with difficult problems; inspects work in progress.
Prepares repair schedules and determines priority of work to be performed; answers inquiries from operating departments concerning vehicle availability.
Supervises the garage located at the Honor Farm.
Stays abreast of changes in manufacturers specifications; informs mechanics of changes in maintenance and repair procedures.
Reviews and approves requests for parts and equipment.
Assists in developing and schedules preventative maintenance programs; assists in revising operating procedures and maintains shop safety.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
May act in the Shop Superintendent's absence as delegated.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Three years as a Mechanic I in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Five years of experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic which must have included the repair of power steering, automatic transmissions, alternators and air conditioning.
KNOWLEDGE
Principles and practices of supervision; principles and practices of automotive and motorized equipment maintenance and repair; tools, equipment and materials used in automotive maintenance and repair; occupational hazards and safety precautions; basic management principles.
ABILITY
Plan, assign and supervise the work of others; diagnose mechanical and electrical problems of equipment and determine needed repair or modification; estimate time and materials needed to complete repair work; maintain records and prepare reports; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, department representatives and others.
