Under general direction, supervises the work of traffic legend painting crews and traffic sign shop crews; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class is responsible for scheduling and supervising crews assigned to painting traffic legends, and assembling and maintaining traffic signs.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Trains, assigns, and supervises the work of crews engaged in painting a variety of pavement markings on County streets and roads, and in installing and maintaining traffic signs.
Supervises and participates in the design and fabrication of traffic control signs and devices; assembles and constructs signs; uses spray-painting equipment, silk-screening materials, stencils, and related hand and power tools.
Supervises and participates in routine maintenance and repair of equipment.
Maintains inventory of traffic supplies; requisitions supplies; receives supplies and verifies against invoices.
Maintains work records and statistics; establishes standards; determines work priorities and schedules.
Maintains records of expenditures, budgetary balances and projections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: One-year experience as a Traffic Striper Operator II in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Four years experience in the construction, installation or painting of traffic control devices and signs.
AND
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic supervisory principles; traffic control standards, devices, rules and regulations; materials, methods, and techniques of traffic striping, legend painting and sign construction; use of brush and spray painting equipment and other hand and power tools; occupational hazards involved in traffic control work; basic mathematics; basic computer and modern office automation technology, including pertinent software; safety precautions necessary for protection of employees, equipment and the public.
ABILITY
Supervise and train subordinate employees; read, understand and interpret job-related materials; perform basic computations in estimating labor and materials; operate computers and related software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; prepare and maintain records and reports.

Mobility-Occasional operation of a data entry device; sitting/standing for extended periods; occasional walking, pushing/pulling, bending, grasping, squatting; driving equipment; Lifting-Frequently 5-30 pounds or less; occasionally 30-70 pounds; occasionally restraining, lifting and/or turning heavy objects; Vision-Good overall vision, color perception, depth perception; occasional reading and close-up work; normal hand and eye coordination; good field of vision/peripheral; Dexterity-Normal dexterity with occasional writing and repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing and talking on the telephone/radio and in person; constant exposure to construction and traffic noise; Special Requirements-May require occasional overtime, weekend or evening work; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent public contact and decision making; occasional concentration required; Environmental-May be exposed to dust, fumes, and varied weather conditions.
