Under general supervision, orders, stores and issues replacement parts, tools and accessories for a wide variety of motor vehicles, trucks, and construction equipment; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level class in the Fleet Parts Specialist series and is utilized primarily in the Fleet Services Division of the Public Works Department. Incumbents of this class are responsible for the daily ordering and issuing of parts used in maintaining a wide variety of fleet and related equipment. Incumbents are also responsible for the inventory control of all parts and records quality control.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Researches, orders and receives automotive and truck parts, supplies and equipment; answers telephone inquiries on item status, price and description for County fleet services.
Inspects parts, supplies and equipment for quality, quantity and correctness; verifies and checks items received against parts catalogs and manufacturer’s identification, model or parts number.
Maintains continuous contact with inventory suppliers and vendors; researches and locates resources for non-standard parts and special equipment and determines the appropriateness and/or feasibility of substituting on the basis of knowledge of interchangeability of such parts.
Issues and distributes parts and supplies to garage, shops and other County facilities as needed; determines availability of parts and estimates delivery time.
Monitors stock levels and updates inventory records or status of items; maintains inventory of items by performing routine physical inventory; maintains manual and computerized records, files and reports of stock received and issued.
Checks receipts against purchase orders to ensure accuracy and completeness of items.
Verifies and validates requests for specifications; prepares purchase orders for supplies.
May operate forklift as required.
May lead and train others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: One year of experience performing the duties equivalent in level to the class of Fleet Parts Specialist Trainee in San Joaquin County.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Two years of experience receiving, issuing, storing, and maintaining an inventory of heavy equipment and automotive parts and related accessories in a large automotive parts warehouse or distribution center.
AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Wide variety of parts used in fleet services; basic principles of inventory requisition and control; automotive parts, equipment, accessories, and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance; vehicle repair and maintenance procedures and terminology; stock and inventory control records; record-keeping systems; techniques of receiving, storing and issuing supplies; personal computer systems and general office computer software and apply computer applications to departmental functions; automotive parts and equipment suppliers and vendors; basic research and filing techniques and operation of standard equipment; safe methods of lifting heavy objects and performing manual tasks and machinery related to fleet services.
ABILITY
Read, understand, and interpret shop manuals and parts lists; read and interpret parts specifications; utilize standard office procedures and equipment; operate personal computer systems and general office computer software; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work with others and lift and move heavy objects.

Mobility – ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, reach above and below desk or counter level including overhead lifting; Lifting - regular lifting of parts, equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds; regular carrying of parts, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds; Visual – ability to read paperwork and computer screens; good overall vision, color perception, depth perception; frequent reading and close-up work; normal hand and eye coordination; good field of vision/peripheral; Dexterity - frequent holding, reaching; grasping; frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing of normal speech; occasional hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person; Emotional/Psychological – occasional public contact; frequent ability to make decisions and concentrate, working alone; occasional exposure to hazardous materials; occasional dealing with emergency situations; Special Requirements – may require working overtime, weekends, nights and holidays; occasional travel; Environmental – frequent exposure to dust, grease, oil, various chemicals, fumes, and noise associated with working in repair shop environment in the motor vehicle industry.
