Under general supervision, services and repairs small engines and park equipment; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3, of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee of this class is responsible for maintaining mechanical, electrical and other equipment used in maintenance of County parks.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Repairs mechanical and electrical problems in lawn and turf equipment; overhauls engines and parts; installs replacement parts.
Maintains tools, tractors, vehicles, and other equipment; tunes engines; sharpens mower blades; cleans, repairs and paints small parks structures and mobile equipment.
Maintains equipment service records; schedules equipment servicing.
Repairs and fabricates metal components of park equipment; cuts and welds metals for park projects such as gates and lock boxes; may design and build small park equipment and tools.
Repairs battery and electrical systems on parks sprinkler systems; repairs sprinkler controllers, lines and valves.
Orders and distributes supplies; checks out equipment to other park employees.
May tow and/or transport equipment for repairs.
May assist with construction or miscellaneous park maintenance, as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: One year of experience in repairing and maintaining small engines and equipment.
License: Must obtain valid Class I California driver's license within six months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE
Materials, equipment, and methods used in maintaining and repairing engines, parts, and systems; operation of engines; occupational hazards and safety precautions; general welding methods, materials and tools.
ABILITY
Follow oral and written instructions; diagnose mechanical, electrical and other repair problems, maintain routine records; use tools and equipment of the trade.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility-Sitting and standing for extended periods, driving, walking, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting, operate small to heavy equipment, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, and crawling; Lifting-Occasionally lift up to 70 plus pounds or restraining or lifting heavy objects; Vision-Good overall vision, color perception, eye/hand coordination, depth perception, occasional reading of close-up work; Dexterity-Normal dexterity; Hearing/Talking-Occasional hearing and talking on the telephone or radio and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional decision making, concentration, public contact, working alone, trauma, and emergency situations; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to indoor climate; frequent exposure to outdoor environment; contact with hazardous materials; may require occasional overtime, weekend or evening work.
