Under general supervision, learns to inspect, repair and overhaul automobiles, light trucks and other gasoline-powered equipment; may
assist in the repair of heavy trucks, buses and construction equipment in a training capacity; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the apprentice/trainee class in the Automotive
Mechanic series where an employee is trained to become proficient and responsible
for the repair and maintenance of gasoline-powered automotive equipment.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Learns to inspect, diagnose problems, repair and overhaul automobiles and gasoline-powered trucks in the field or shop.
Learns to operate equipment to analyze engine troubles; diagnose on-board computer fault codes, noises and mechanical failures; adjust and/or repair fuel injection systems; and repair and install automotive equipment, such as starters, alternators, windshield wiper motors, sirens, spotlights and special police equipment.
Learns to tune engines using diagnostic and electronic testing equipment; check and certify smog control devices; replace main and connecting rod bearings; inspect and repair automatic transmissions, universal joints, differentials, transaxles, front and rear axles, power steering systems and anti-lock brake systems; inspect and repair hydraulic accessory systems such as lift gates; reline and adjust brakes; align wheels.
Learns to inspect and repair automotive air conditioning equipment.
Learns to evaluate the condition of cooling systems, locate faults or defects, and make necessary repairs.
Prepares work reports as required.
May assist in directing, instructing and inspecting the work of Equipment Service Workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: Three years as an Equipment Service Worker II in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: One year as an Equipment Service Worker III in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN III
Experience: Five years performing general maintenance services on automobiles, light trucks and other gasoline-powered equipment.
OR PATTERN IV
Experience: One year performing maintenance services on heavy trucks, buses, road construction, and other heavy equipment.
AND FOR ALL PATTERNS
Substitution: Completion of 30 semester (or 45 quarter) units in automotive technology or automotive mechanics from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience in all of the above patterns.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Standard
automotive service and maintenance procedures; basic mechanical principles
related to automotive fuel, cooling, ignition, electrical and brake systems,
and automatic and standard transmissions; basic principles of gasoline-fueled
internal combustion engines; basic methods, materials, tools, standard
practices, occupational hazards, and appropriate safety precautions of the automotive
mechanic trade.
ABILITY
Learn
to diagnose automotive and other public works equipment problems and perform
the mechanical work required and to make necessary repairs, including repairs
to fuel injection systems and transaxles; learn to interpret on-board computer
fault codes; follow oral and written instructions; maintain established
schedules and deadlines; learn to use the tools, machines, and testing
instruments of the auto mechanic trade.

Mobility – frequent standing and walking; occasional pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, twisting, climbing, kneeling, squatting; Lifting/Carrying – frequently 50 pounds or less; occasionally 51 – 70 pounds; Dexterity – frequent handling, reaching, grasping, and fingering; Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing and speaking normal speech and speaking loudly over equipment noise; occasional hearing/talking on a radio; Visual – frequent use of good overall vision, at normal or corrected to normal acuity; frequent use of depth perception and peripheral vision; occasional reading and close-up work; Environmental – frequent exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, and odors; occasional exposure to varied weather conditions or working with hazardous materials; Emotional/Psychological – frequent concentration; Special Requirements – occasional working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency call-back; occasional travel.
