DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in installing, altering, adjusting, maintaining and repairing analog and digital systems including, but not limited to, fire alarm, central security, fuel dispensing, building management, nurse call systems, parking control, closed circuit television, public address systems, computer/data systems, and telephone/communications systems, and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this single level class performs a variety of journey level tasks related to the maintenance and operation of special data systems, communication systems, and electronic systems within San Joaquin General Hospital facilities. The incumbent will report to and receive direction from the Facilities Manager for the Department of Health Care Services.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Installs, alters, maintains and repairs a wide variety of analog and digital data and alarm systems.
  • Installs wiring for special systems as required by manufacturer or design including fiber-optic systems; makes terminations at terminal boards.
  • Inspects and tests wiring systems, terminal boards and low voltage power supplies; performs required testing of nurse call, fire alarm, central security, closed circuit television, cable television, data and phone systems, satellite antennae, and automated building maintenance systems.
  • Identifies and repairs equipment breakdowns using sophisticated testing equipment including laptop computers; inputs data into personal computer(s) based special systems.
  • Performs regular preventative maintenance on all low voltage special systems and maintains related records.
  • Makes recommendations on spare parts requirements for all special systems; prepares cost estimates for labor and material for proposed systems installations.
  • Assists in the design and configuration of wiring systems, development of specifications for wiring, termination and peripheral devices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of either (1) an advanced military electronics school; or (2) telephone company training as Data/Special Systems Technician, or (3) accredited trade schools or approved apprenticeship programs specializing in the area of electronics or a related field.

Experience:  Two years of progressively responsible experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of low voltage special systems typically found in large office buildings or industrial plants.

Substitution:  One additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.

KNOWLEDGE

Principles and theory of digital data transmission; practices, methods, tools, material and equipment for the installation and maintenance of personal computer based security systems, fire alarm systems, nurse call (communications) systems, data and phone wiring (including fiber-optic), personal computer based automated building maintenance systems; and the National Electrical Codes pertaining to the installation of these systems.

ABILITY

Install, maintain, repair, and locate defects in low voltage digital and analog systems; install multi-conductor hard wore, co-axial, and fiber-optic systems; read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints; work independently; prepare clear and concise written reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform essential physical requirements including, but not limited to, frequent standing for long periods, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing ladders, stairs and crawling; frequently lift 5 to 30 pounds with occasional lifting over 70 pounds.
