Under general supervision, performs varied responsible field and office engineering duties; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this class is responsible for assisting technical and professional staff in a variety of engineering assignments by performing the less difficult technical aspects of the work.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Prepares drawings from field notes; reduces field notes; plots and checks center lines and cross sections; uses calculator to determine engineering measurements; makes routine engineering and survey computation; tabulates field data; maintains records and prepares reports; may utilize Computer Aided Drafting (C.A.D.) and other computerized activities.
Performs rod and chain functions on survey crews; cuts and clears brush and uses manual and electronic equipment to locate survey monuments; drives stakes and pins; keeps and checks survey party field notes; may use theodolite, electronic distance measuring equipment, and level; may act as lead worker in a small survey party.
Assists in the checking of private land surveys; may draw topographic and other maps; checks and revises existing maps showing boundaries and districts; searches titles and documents and assists in the preparation of legal deeds and property descriptions.
May assist in the issuance of permits; gives information in person and by telephone regarding permit applications and ordinance requirements.
Inspects road, bridge and other construction work in the field under supervision; checks grading for proper slopes; checks concrete and aggregate for compliance with specifications; participates in maintaining records of labor and equipment used on construction projects; prepares and submits reports of project progress for review.
Takes soil, aggregate, and concrete test samples for laboratory analysis; conducts routine soil and materials tests; checks for compliance with specifications.
Sets traffic counters and conducts manual traffic counts; compiles traffic data; repairs and maintains equipment used in traffic engineering division; assists in drafting and drawing maps; prepares charts, graphs, and diagrams related to engineering studies.
May direct the work of and train less experienced engineering personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of varied technical engineering experience at a level comparable to an Engineering Aide in San Joaquin County service.
Substitution: College coursework in engineering science may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
The principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in engineering drafting; techniques and practices of field surveying; mathematics through trigonometry; general road and bridge construction principles and practices.
ABILITY
Read and interpret specifications, maps and technical drawings; perform precise survey work of skilled drafting work; make field and office engineering computations using engineering instruments and aids; learn to use specialized measuring and testing equipment for the materials testing laboratory or in assisting in the traffic or hydraulic engineering division; prepare charts, graphs and diagrams related to engineering studies; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
