CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the engineering series. Incumbents are given assignments in Public Works projects that include, but are not limited to transportation, drainage, water resources and supply, waste water, solid waste and hazardous waste management. Initial assignments are routine, but as experience is gained, more responsibility for projects is assigned.

Assists in the design of Public Works projects by preparing plans, profiles and cross sections; makes quantity estimates, horizontal and vertical alignments and curve computations; establishes highway and hydraulic gradients.
Prepares and reviews maps, right-of-way deeds and legal descriptions; calculates and plots the results of field surveys; locates, sets or resets survey points.
Learns to act as resident engineer for projects under contract such as roads, traffic signals, bridges, sanitary systems, drainage/water systems, buildings and other structures; may lead and/or direct subordinate paraprofessional and/or technical staff.
Writes engineering specifications for proposed projects; makes estimates for projects planned or under construction.
Drafts engineering reports; assists in the application of principles of engineering design and theory to assigned projects.
