Under general supervision, supervises and participates in laundry work at either San Joaquin General Hospital or at one of the County custody facilities; and does related or other duties as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent of this class is responsible for supervising and participating in the day-to-day operation of a laundry facility. The incumbent of the position in Health Care Services acts for the Assistant Manager of Support Services in that person’s absence. An incumbent in one of the custody facilities reports to the Support Services Director and may act on matters pertaining to laundry operations in the absence of the Support Services Director.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Schedules employees or detainees; assigns and supervises the work of laundry staff engaged in sorting, washing, drying, finishing and distributing laundry.
Orients new employees or detainees; trains new employees or detainees in the operation of the washers, drying tumbler, spreader and flat work ironer, steam tunnel, small piece folder and other laundry equipment.
Ensures the orderly flow of items through the laundry process by making minor equipment adjustments and repairs and adjusting personnel to meet daily needs.
Monitors employee or detainee performance; prepares and signs employee or detainee evaluations; recommends disciplinary action.
Acts for management level laundry staff as designated.
Confers with appropriate personnel concerning ordering of supplies, new equipment and replacement linens.
May operate laundry vehicle to pick up and deliver a hospital linen from various locations throughout the County including but not limited to: clinics, physicians’ offices, and hospitals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of paid work experience in a commercial, industrial or institutional laundry including six months washer experience.
License: Possession of valid California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE
Methods, materials, and equipment used in large scale laundry operations; practices involved in operating a linen supply service for a large institution; textiles and colored fabric and their reaction to detergents, bleaches, water temperatures and machine washing.
ABILITY
Understand and follow written instructions; assign, train, supervise, and evaluate the work of others; operate a wide variety of commercial laundry equipment; keep and maintain simple records; establish and maintain effective working relations with others; lift and move heavy loads.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility - Frequent operation of heavy duty laundry equipment; occasionally standing, walking, crawling, bending/squatting, and stairs; frequent driving and sitting may be required; Lifting - occasionally lifting 5 to 70 pounds; Vision - frequent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, reading and close-up work; Dexterity - normal dexterity with occasional writing; Hearing/Talking - constant hearing and talking on the telephone/radio and in person; Emotional/Psychological - constant public contact and decision making with frequent concentration required; Special Requirements - may occasionally work weekends/nights/overtime; may be required to travel; Environmental Conditions - occasional exposure to noise and occasional exposure to hazardous materials, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation and changing indoor/outdoor conditions.
