DEFINITION

Under general supervision, supervises a group of employees performing cleaning and sanitation of County facilities; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first supervisory level in the housekeeping series. An incumbent in this class is responsible for ensuring that all housekeeping activities on an assigned shift or area are performed efficiently and according to established sanitation standards.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Schedules employees; assigns and supervises staff responsible for the cleaning of assigned areas; adjusts personnel to meet daily needs.
  • Orients new employees; trains, or monitors and evaluates training of new employees; explains methods of cleaning and economical use of materials.
  • Monitors employee performance; prepares and signs employee evaluations; counsels employees, recommends disciplinary action; may interview and recommend hiring of temporary or permanent staff.
  • Assists in the inspection of assigned areas to ensure compliance with established environmental standards.
  • Assumes duties of the Assistant Manager of Support Services in that person's absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  One year of hospital or other institutional cleaning.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic cleaning methods, materials, equipment and their use; basic reading, writing, mathematics documentation skills; standard units of measure such as ounces, quarts and gallons; safety techniques and procedures; techniques and procedures; techniques of supervision and training.

ABILITY

Follow and issue oral and written instructions; train and evaluate subordinates; maintain records; prepare routine reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work around sick people and in contaminated areas; work continuously while standing and walking.
