DEFINITION

Under direction, assists in the management of housekeeping services for the Department of Health Care Services; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the second supervisory level in the housekeeping series. Incumbents manage resources, employees, materials and equipment, in support of housekeeping for Health Care Services. Direction is received from the Manager of Housekeeping Services.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Directs housekeeping operations through subordinate supervisors; assigns, supervises, trains and evaluates the work of subordinate supervisory staff.
  • Schedules and coordinates operations; prioritizes work; evaluates and establishes quality standards.
  • Assists in preparation of the department budget; recommends equipment and supply levels; requisitions materials and supplies; maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Inspects completed work to assure conformance with priorities, schedules and standards; investigates complaints and recommends corrective actions; assists in reviewing operations to identify improvements.
  • Acts in the absence of the Manager of Housekeeping Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a major in business administration, health care administration, institutional facilities management or a closely related field.

Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience in either institutional housekeeping or laundry operations, including one year in a supervisory capacity.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-to-year basis.

KNOWLEDGE

Principals and practices of administration, budget preparation and supervision; health hazards, sanitation, and safety precautions; materials, chemicals, methods and equipment used in housekeeping procedures and their relative costs; regulatory agency standards and requirements for hospital housekeeping activities.

ABILITY

Plan, direct and administer housekeeping and related operations; assign, train, and evaluate staff; prepare and implement budgets and fiscal controls; conduct cost studies and analyze methods for the most economical purchase of housekeeping supplies and equipment; prepare correspondence and reports; establish and maintain working relationships with others; use computers effectively to accomplish work objectives; working within management teams for effective problem solving; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Frequent walking and standing for long periods of time; occasional sitting for long periods of time while operating a keyboard; Lifting-Occasional lifting of 30 pounds or less; Vision-Constant use of overall visual capabilities; frequent use of color perception, hand/eye coordination, reading and/or close up work; Dexterity-Frequent holding, grasping, repetitive motion and writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing and talking of normal speech in person and on the telephone; Emotional/Psychological-Constant concentration and decision making; frequent public contact; occasional exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief or death; occasional working alone and traveling; Special Requirements-May work weekends/nights and occasional overtime; Environmental Conditions-Frequent exposure to noise; occasional risk of exposure to hazardous materials; occasional contact with dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation and indoor/outdoor cold and heat.
