DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs responsible medical library technical work in maintaining the Health Care Services Agency's medical library; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent of this single-position class maintains medical reference books, catalogues, periodicals, automated databases, and other reference materials for use by department staff and patients; assists hospital staff in medical research and reference; and requires a high degree of independent judgment and action, and a high degree of technical competence.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assists in the acquisition of medical reference books, reports, journals, audio visual materials, and other library materials; orders, catalogues, maintains, and processes books and periodicals, including electronic or computer assisted media; shelves books, arranges furnishings and exhibits to produce a neat and attractive library atmosphere.
  • Assists hospital staff, resident physicians, students and others in locating reference materials; performs literature searches online and trains and assists readers in online searches; researches phone requests from the public.
  • Processes interlibrary loan requests online; searches, photocopies and sends requested articles for interlibrary loans; maintains database of journal titles; maintains record of interlibrary loans requested and received.
  • Performs physical inventories of books and other property; maintains pamphlets and clipping files; purges outdates volumes and other materials; sorts, selects and orders commercial bindings for periodicals.
  • Assists physician faculty in producing computer assisted media for use in research publications; assists residency faculty in setting up audio-visual or videoconference support for residency training; provides support for faculty in producing photographic and biomedical images for use in research and teaching.
  • Assists in developing library policy and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness of operation; assists in developing and maintaining the annual budget.
  • Develops and maintains special files and collections; arranges miscellaneous materials and subject files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university in library technology, business administration, public administration, the social sciences, or a related field.

Experience: One year of increasingly responsible technical library work experience, including book acquisition, cataloging, reference, and compilation of bibliographies; experience in multi-media presentations is desirable. 

Substitution #1: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. 

Substitution #2: Completion of 24 units in library science or related courses from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the above required experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Modern medical library organization, principles and procedures; materials, methods and procedures associated with modern medical library programs, including those related to electronic cataloguing systems; computer assisted multi-media presentation programs and equipment; basic computer and modern office automation technology and computer software programs relevant to department operations; medical terminology; ordering, processing and cataloguing books and journals.

ABILITY

Organize and maintain a modern medical library in an attractive, orderly manner; perform research, cataloguing and ordering of medical library texts and other materials; provide courteous customer service to library users; operate computer assisted media equipment and programs; operate basic computer and modern office automation technology, including pertinent software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, medical staff and the public; compose routine letters; work independently.

Mobility-Operating a data entry device; occasional sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; occasional bending, stooping, and reaching overhead; Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds; Vision-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Dexterity-Normal dexterity with frequent writing and repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent concentration and decision making; frequent public contact; occasional exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief or death; occasional working alone; Special Requirements-May require working overtime/weekends/nights; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
