Under general supervision, performs chronic hemodialysis procedures, and installs, tests, and repairs hemodialysis equipment; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3 Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class are responsible for independently performing duties to maintain a variety of complex hemodialysis equipment and to conduct hemodialysis procedures. Incumbents in this class train professional and technical staff on how to operate the hemodialysis equipment. An incumbent in the class is a Certified Hemodialysis Technician as issued by the State of California.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Installs, maintains, and adjusts dialysis equipment using specialized tools and equipment; modifies and or fabricates medical equipment to conform to new specifications or requirements; assists in testing and evaluating equipment prior to purchase.
Assists in developing and providing in-service training programs related to hemodialysis procedures and safe operation of medical equipment; reviews and verifies staff competencies in use of dialysis equipment and provides feedback for staff evaluations.
Conducts chronic hemodialysis procedures using sterile techniques; initiates and terminates dialysis; monitors equipment and makes necessary adjustments; disassembles dialysis units; disposes of waste materials; cleans component parts with sterile solutions.
Monitors patients during dialysis; notifies professional staff of atypical symptoms; may prepare surgical instruments and equipment for use.
Records and tabulates patient and equipment data for records and reports.
Monitors reverse osmosis system for effectiveness; makes corrections when necessary to assure quality of water used in dialysis.
May administer limited medications under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed physician and within written limitations established by law or regulations.
Instructs professional and technical staff in the use of hemodialysis equipment and procedures; follows established hospital policies and procedures and state mandates.
Trains and evaluates patient in-home use of artificial kidney and dialysis delivery systems; advises patients on home installation of equipment; may make emergency service calls to homes after regular working hours.
May serve as lead worker in dialysis unit; provides direction to staff as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: One year performing hemodialysis in a dialysis center or acute care hospital setting.
Certification: Possession of current certification as a Certified Hemodialysis Technician issued by the State of California Professional Certification Branch for Aids and Technicians.
Special Requirements: Ability to obtain certifications in various hemodialysis equipment training and repairs within one year of employment.
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic mathematical concepts; principles of chemistry, physics and physiology; use of artificial kidneys and dialysis delivery systems; aseptic techniques; dialysis equipment testing in an acute-care hospital and outpatient clinic; hospital licensing regulations and accreditation standards; safety standards and precautions; personal computer systems and general office computer software.
ABILITY
Operate highly specialized dialysis delivery systems; take accurate instrument readings and measurements; direct staff in operation of equipment and dialysis procedures; make accurate mathematical calculations and interpolations from graphs and calculator; install, modify, repair and maintain dialysis equipment using specialized tools and equipment; maintain records and prepare reports; teach staff and work with patients and their families to follow exacting procedures; recognize adverse symptoms and take appropriate action; learn to administer first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation; utilize advanced office procedures and equipment; operate computers and related software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and others.
