Under general supervision, maintains a pharmaceutical inventory and ordering system for San Joaquin General Hospital; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this class is responsible for evaluating and controlling an inventory of drugs and supplies sufficient for normal demands, for evaluating new products and changes to standard stock lists, and for insuring timely and economical purchase of all necessary drugs.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Reviews stock levels to insure that adequate supplies are available for normal usage; determines storage space and ordering requirements; purchases necessary drugs through existing term agreements and purchase orders.
Receives and verifies quantity and quality of drug shipments; forwards checked invoices to accounts payable; prepares interdepartmental billings.
Maintains inventory control records; prepares reports of drug usage, purchases and quantities on hand; reviews all drug purchases to insure bid compliance and to control cost of non-bid purchases; determines appropriate inventory quantities to promote both availability and turnover of stock.
Reviews drug product information from vendors and meets with sales representatives; insures the most economical purchase of drugs and supplies; makes recommendations to Pharmacists regarding availability, prices and vendors; initiates term agreements.
Develops and implements internal audit procedures to insure accountability for drugs and supplies; assists in the development of policy and procedures regarding purchasing, storing and distributing drugs and pharmaceutical supplies, including dangerous drugs and controlled substances.
Maintains drug stock lists for all nursing units and outside clinics and facilities; assists in evaluation of orders for non-standard items and for changes to stock lists.
May supervise subordinate staff in the maintenance and control of drug inventory and distribution.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: One (1) year as a Pharmacy Technician III, OR two (2) years as a Pharmacy Technician II, in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Education: Completion of eight (8) semester units in biological or physical sciences at an accredited college.
Experience: Four years ordering, receiving, pricing, stocking and maintaining inventory control of pharmaceutical supplies and drugs.
Substitution: Six months of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS
License: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the State of California Board of Pharmacy.
KNOWLEDGE
Drug terminology, weights and measurements; inventory management and office procedures; basic chemistry, mathematics and biology; basic purchasing practices and techniques; principles of supervision.
ABILITY
Learn and apply the principles and practices used in purchasing pharmaceutical products; learn and operate computerized inventory management programs; read and understand job-related material; develop and implement working procedures; supervise other staff members; develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing.

Mobility—operation of a data entry device; ability to stand or sit for long periods, move about an indoor area, reach above and below bench level; Dexterity-- handle individual papers; count individual pills; write and take notes; Lifting/Pushing/Pulling--regular lifting of up to 25 pounds; pushing carts; Visual Requirements--ability to read case files and computer screens; constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking--ability to hear normal speech, hear on the telephone, talk in person, and talk on the telephone; Emotional/Psychological Factors--frequent public contact; ability to make decisions and concentrate; Special requirements: may require working nights, weekends, and overtime; Environmental – occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
