Under general supervision, performs a variety of radiographic work for diagnostic and treatment purposes; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the Radiologic Technologist series. The Radiologic Technologist I is distinguished from that of the Radiologic Technologist II class in that Radiologic Technologists I learn to perform specialized radiographic procedures under the supervision of a radiologist while Radiologic Technologists II independently perform procedures and may assist in training Radiology students.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Prepares and positions patients for diagnostic x-ray films; determines the correct exposure factors on the basis of height, weight, portion of body involved and degree of penetration required; selects appropriate cones and screens to reduce secondary radiation and fogging; sets machine control and exposes the required number and type of film.
Learns to assist Radiologist in fluoroscopic and other minor interventional x-ray procedures; assembles equipment; measures and mixes barium and contrast media; maintains surveillance over patients, performs radiographs as necessary for the radiographic procedure.
Records patient information, patient identification numbers, and number and type of views taken in-patient log; maintains records as required.
Demonstrates procedures to students; monitors students' performance of procedures, correcting faulty technique and explaining appropriate methods.
May receive on-the-job instructions in mammography and related quality control and quality assurance documentation.
Develops exposed film using automatic processors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California, as Radiologic Technologist.
Note: Generally, persons who are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologists in the State of California upon application and payment of fees to the State Department of Health.
Special Requirement: Possession of a State of California Certificate in mammography or a State of California fluoroscopy permit may be required as condition for advancement to the Radiologic Technologist II classification.
KNOWLEDGE
Methods and techniques of diagnostic radiography; various anatomical positions used in radiography; and care and use of radiographic equipment; and safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation.
ABILITY
Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, manual dexterity sufficient to administer procedures and operate equipment, bend, stoop and lift patients; understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions in exact detail; demonstrate the operation of x-ray equipment in practical work situations; position patients for a variety of radiography procedures; work effectively with medical staff, patients, and co-workers; and maintain records.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility-Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing/pulling, and operation of heavy equipment; occasional sitting for long periods of time and stair climbing; Frequency of Lifting-Constant lifting of 5 lbs. or less; frequent restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people; occasional lifting of 5 to above 70 lbs.; Visual Requirements-Constant need for overall vision, hand/eye coordination and reading/close up work; frequent need for color perception, depth perception and field of vision; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching and grasping; frequent writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech and talking in person; frequent hearing on the telephone/radio and talking on the radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological Factors-Constant public contact, decision making, concentration and working alone; frequent exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, grief and death; occasional weekend/night work and overtime/travel; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
