DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs clinical instructor duties in training a group of radiologic technology students; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class is responsible for classroom and clinical instruction duties of radiology technologist students. This class differs from Radiologic Technologist II in that incumbents of the latter class perform journey level radiologic procedures and are also responsible for clinical demonstrations and monitoring performance of students while an incumbent of this class performs clinical and classroom instruction on a full-time basis.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Instructs students in clinical aspects of performing radiographic examinations; demonstrates positioning, techniques, use of equipment and safety precautions. Evaluates performance and provides additional training as required; supervises students performing radiological procedures.
  • Teaches classes in radiographic techniques, procedures, use of equipment, safety hazards and precautions; develops lesson plans, examinations and instructional aids.
  • Maintains student records including examinations, logs, performance evaluations, clinical written assignments, and film critiques.
  • Conducts or assists in conducting practical examinations.
  • Assists in selection of radiologic technology students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two and one-half years performing professional radiographic work.

Substitution: Graduation from the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Radiologic Technology may be substituted for six months of the required experience. 

Licenses and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California, as a Radiologic Technologist. 

Additional Requirements: Must meet the minimum qualifications for Clinical Instructor in Radiologic Technology of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and the San Joaquin Delta College Department of Health Sciences. Possession of a State of California certificate in mammography may be required. 

Note: Generally, persons who are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of California upon application and payment of fees to the State Department of Health.

KNOWLEDGE

Techniques used in classroom and clinical instruction; principles, practices and techniques used in radiography; care and use of radiographic equipment; safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation.

ABILITY

Demonstrate and instruct students in technical procedures; prepare and present lesson plans; evaluate techniques; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain records; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, manual dexterity sufficient to administer procedures and operate equipment; bend, stoop and lift patients; position patients for a variety of imaging examinations.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing/pulling, and operation of heavy equipment; occasional sitting for long periods of time and stair climbing; Frequency of Lifting-Constant lifting of 5 lbs. or less; frequent restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people; occasional lifting of 5 to above 70 lbs.; Visual Requirements-Constant need for overall vision, hand/eye coordination and reading/close up work; frequent need for color perception, depth perception and field of vision; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching and grasping; frequent writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech and talking in person; frequent hearing on the telephone/radio and talking on the radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological Factors-Constant public contact, decision making, concentration and working alone; frequent exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, grief and death; occasional weekend/night work and overtime/travel; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
