Under direction, performs administrative work developing and coordinating a student training program in the principles and techniques of radiographic procedures; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class is responsible for organizing, administering and reviewing, through classroom instruction and on-the-job demonstrations, a hospital based training program in radiologic technology which complies with regulations of the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, and the California Department of Education. The objective of the program is to qualify students for registration as Radiologic Technologists. Medical direction is received from the Radiologist and administrative direction from the Director of Diagnostic Imaging. The incumbent may supervise assigned staff.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Develops, designs, and administers a comprehensive radiologic technology student training program; teaches classes in radiographic techniques, procedures and use of equipment, including the hazards of overexposure to radiation and preventive measures; develops lesson plans, tests, visual aids and other instructional materials; oversees instruction and demonstration sessions given by other personnel in technical aspects of radiography and related theory.
Recruits students, providing career information through personal appearances, by phone and mail; screens student applications; participates in the selection of students.
Coordinates scheduling of students with operational radiological units; coordinates course work of students with Delta College; provides academic counseling as appropriate; observes, evaluates and records performance of students and renders supplemental training as necessary.
Keeps informed of technical developments and new instructional techniques through review of literature and attendance at seminars; updates curriculum.
Maintains records of student attendance and progress in courses; counsels students, assisting them to find solutions to course-related problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California, as a Radiologic Technologist.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in health science, natural science, social or behavioral science, education or a closely related field.
Experience: Three years performing professional radiographic work, including or supplemented by two years instructing students in radiographic procedures.
Note: Generally, persons who are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of California upon application and payment of fees to the State Department of Health.
Additional Requirements: Must meet the Minimum Qualifications for Program Director in Radiologic Technology of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, and the San Joaquin Delta College, Department of Health Sciences.
KNOWLEDGE
Techniques used in instruction, curriculum design, program planning, evaluation and testing, and student counseling; methods used in radiography; care and use of radiographic equipment; safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation; basic computer and modern office automation technology and pertinent software programs .
ABILITY
Develop and coordinate an educational program; instruct students in technical procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships; maintain records; utilize computers and office automation equipment; communicate effectively, both orally or in writing.
