Under direction, supervises and implements a diagnostic and therapeutic physical therapy program for patients with a variety of disabling conditions; and does other or related work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the Assistant Department Manager level class in the Physical Therapist series. An incumbent is responsible for supervision of staff in a physical therapy work unit, serves as assistant to the unit manager, and maintains some patient care responsibilities. Direction is received from the Therapy Services Manager or other management staff.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Performs physical therapy evaluations and interprets findings; plans, implements and coordinates all types of physical therapeutic treatment for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
Maintains accurate records and prepares written reports, including unit statistical reports and other administrative reports as assigned.
Participates in the selection of new staff; assigns, trains, and supervises and may evaluate professional and para-professional staff; orients or assigns the departmental orientation of new staff; prepares day-to-day patient/staff schedules.
Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; coordinates in-service education programs and classes; may coordinate departmental staff meetings; may attend management staff meetings as assigned.
May serve as Academic Clinical Coordinator of Education for university physical therapy programs.
May coordinate research projects; assists with departmental projects and program development.
Supervises and is responsible for proper maintenance of equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed physical therapist in San Joaquin County service.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: Four years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed physical therapist performing diagnostic and therapeutic physical therapy techniques for a variety of disabling conditions.
AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess and maintain a current license as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California (PTBOC); and if required by the nature of the assignment, must also possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
Current principles, methods, techniques, equipment and materials used in physical therapy; possible reactions of and hazards to patients during treatment and of precautionary and remedial measures; anatomy and physiology related to treatments; psychological and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions; principles of clinical supervision; basic principles of personnel management.
ABILITY
Organize and implement physical therapy treatment programs; teach techniques of treatment in specialty areas; conduct individual and group treatment programs; gather, analyze, interpret and report statistical data; prepare complex written reports; interpret and adapt physician orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations; assign and evaluate the work of others; perform essential physical/mental requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, including but not limited to: standing for long periods, walking, pushing, pulling, bending and lifting patients/clients, good manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Special Requirements – may require occasional overtime, and weekend or evening work. Emotional/Psychological – occasional emergency situations; occasional exposure to trauma, grief and death; occasional exposure to depression and psychiatric disorders in patients, constant public contact and decision making; constant concentration required.
