Under immediate supervision, trained and assists in making determinations and developing programs to meet nutritional needs of clients in various Public Health Services programs; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the pre-registered, trainee level in the Public Health Nutritionist series. Incumbents in this class learn to perform and are trained in the various duties of a Public Health Nutritionist and assist professional staff in the more routine duties.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Assesses nutritional needs of clients in an assigned program.
Learns to and develops programs and services to meet client nutritional needs.
Provides counseling for clients with specific food and nutritional needs.
Develops and implements nutrition education programs for individuals, families and groups.
Within a specified program, may learn to provide breastfeeding support, education and counseling to clients.
Gathers, analyzes and organizes data; prepares and maintains appropriate records and reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in foods and nutrition, dietetics, nutritional sciences, or a closely related field, AND completion of an approved dietetic internship or coordinated program.
Special Requirement: An incumbent must successfully complete the examination and obtain certification as a Registered Dietitian with the American Dietetic Association within the one year probationary period. Failure to become registered will result in release from employment.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
The basic principles and practices of nutrition and its relationship to health and disease; public health education and training methods and practices; community resources, including social and health agencies; social and cultural aspects of public health nutrition; data gathering and report preparation methods and principles; basic aspects of public relations; basic computer and modern office automation technology relevant to department operations.
ABILITY
Learn and assist in identifying, counseling and providing public health nutrition needs and services; learn to interpret nutrition program requirements and guidelines; analyze data; prepare reports and documents; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; make presentations to groups; establish and maintain effective work relationships with a wide variety of persons with nutritional problems and needs and with the general public and staff; operate basic computer and modern office automation technology, including pertinent software.
