Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level technical duties in support of centralized data processing operations within the Information Systems Division; sets up, monitors and operates data processing equipment and associated peripheral devices; and performs other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the Information Systems Technician series. Incumbents learn to perform various central data processing support duties that include processing production runs, monitoring systems/terminals/printers, conducting daily backups, scheduling production jobs, and performing quality assurance activities. As an entry-level class, incumbents with sufficient education and/or training may have limited or no related work experience, and work is performed utilizing established procedures and limited use of independent judgment.
This class is distinguished from the Information Systems Technician II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including monitoring production runs and printing and distributing reports. The program assignment will determine the emphasis of an incumbent's duties as described below.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Learns to perform technical duties in support of centralized data processing operations; monitors and operates mainframe computer system and peripheral equipment including monitors, terminals, printers, disk drives and tape drives.
Learns to monitor batch jobs for daily processing; runs programs in accordance with established schedules; documents all jobs completed; identifies errors and initiates restart instructions; advises appropriate staff of production problems; documents all unresolved issues; ensures accuracy and quality of completed jobs.
Learns to monitor console and systems for errors and abnormal situations; checks system status; maintains problem logs; responds to error messages; resolves issues or refers to appropriate staff member.
Learns to conduct system and database back ups on a routine basis; files back up tapes; maintains tape library.
Learns to perform quality assurance and scheduler duties; logs requested jobs; checks quality of reports and forms printed; ensures all print jobs are complete and accurate; processes, prints, decollates, bursts and distributes completed materials.
Maintains and cleans peripheral equipment; clean tape drives and printers; stocks and loads printer paper.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Education: Completion of at least 60 semester units from an accredited college or university, including 12 units in Computer Science.
Substitution: Possession of an approved information systems technology certificate, or completion of an approved information systems training course may substitute for all or part of the above required education. A list of approved certificates and/or courses shall be maintained within the Human Resources Department.
Note: This education requirement shall be waived for individuals employed within the Information Systems Division in the San Joaquin County class of Data Technician I on September 13, 2000.
OR PATTERN II
Experience: One year operating computers and peripheral data processing equipment in an information systems environment.
KNOWLEDGE
Operations, services and activities of a data processing center; principles and practices of customer service; basic operational characteristics of data processing and associated peripheral equipment; modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers; principles and procedures of record keeping.
ABILITY
Run batch programs according to established guidelines; learn to respond to questions and inquiries from system users; learn principles of computer system operation and monitoring; learn principles of computer report preparation and batch job processing; learn methods and techniques of scheduling production jobs; learn methods and techniques used to troubleshoot and diagnose various computer operation problems; learn methods and techniques of monitoring inventory levels; learn operational characteristics of remote terminal and telecommunication devices; learn to set up and operate data processing and peripheral equipment; learn to conduct system and database back ups on a routine basis; learn to identify and resolve computer production problems; learn principles and practices of quality control; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
