Under general supervision, performs journey-level technical duties in support of centralized data processing operations within the Information Systems Division; set ups, monitors and operates data processing equipment and associated peripheral devices; and performs other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Code.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey-level class within the Information Systems Technician series. Employees perform the full range of central data processing support duties that include processing production runs, monitoring systems/terminals/printers, conducting daily backups, scheduling production jobs, and performing quality assurance activities. At this level, incumbents receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This class is distinguished from the Information Systems Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. This class is distinguished from the Information Systems Technician III in that the latter provides advanced technical support to system users and may provide lead direction and training to lower level staff. The program assignment will determine the emphasis of an incumbent's duties as described below.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Performs journey level technical duties in support of centralized data processing operations; monitors and operates mainframe computer system and peripheral equipment including monitors, terminals, printers, disk drives, and tape drives.
Monitors batch jobs for daily processing; edits, changes and updates job control language as necessary; runs programs in accordance with established schedules; documents all jobs completed; identifies errors and initiates restart instructions; advises appropriate staff of production problems; documents all unresolved issues; ensures accuracy and quality of completed jobs.
Performs quality assurance and scheduler duties; logs, schedules and sets up requested jobs; checks quality of reports and forms printed; ensures all print jobs are complete and accurate; processes, prints, decollates, bursts and distributes completed materials.
Monitors console and systems for errors and abnormal situations; checks system status; maintains problem logs; responds to error messages; resolves issues or refers to appropriate staff member.
Conducts system and database back ups on a routine basis; files back up tapes; maintains tape library.
Provides support in troubleshooting problems on remote equipment; installs and performs minor repairs as directed.
Monitors equipment performance; coordinates the dispatch and receipt of equipment to be repaired with manufacturer representatives or vendor staff.
Maintains and cleans peripheral equipment; cleans tape drives and printers; stocks and loads printer paper.
Coordinates operations with other shift staff; provides assistance in training new computer operations staff and trainees.
Maintains and monitors form inventory; provides information to client on inventory levels; orders forms and coordinates activities with vendors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: One year as an Information Systems Technician I in San Joaquin County.
Note: This requirement shall be waived for individuals employed within the Information Systems Division in the San Joaquin County class of Data Technician III on September 13, 2000. Individuals who are employed within the Information Systems Division in the San Joaquin County class of Data Technician I on September 13, 2000, shall be credited for experience in that class on a year-for-year basis.
OR PATTERN II
Education Completion of at least 60 semester units from an accredited college or university, including 12 units in Computer Science.
Experience: One year of experience operating computers and peripheral data processing equipment in an information systems environment.
Substitution #1: Possession of an approved information systems technology certificate, or completion of an approved information systems training course may substitute for all or part of the above required education. A list of approved certificates and/or courses shall be maintained within the Human Resources Department.
Substitution #2: One additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for the above required education.
