Under general supervision, performs skilled computer operations work in supervising and participating in the operation of a single computer operating system and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this class operate a variety of computers and peripheral data processing equipment and normally supervise a unit of data operations equipment and normally supervise a unit of data operations and data entry personnel. This class differs from Data Technician III in that incumbents of this class utilize a single operating system and supervise others, while Data Technician III incumbents operate and monitor multiple software/computer operating systems and may perform lead work over others. Short-term, non-supervisory Data Technician II assignments may occasionally be made for training on one of the systems in a multi-programming, multiple operating system environment.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Monitors a computer system console and peripheral and peripheral equipment; operates disk drives, terminals, printers, tape devices and paper handling equipment; observes machines and control panels from the computer console for status indicator lights, console displays/printouts, and different forms of error messages.
Assigns, train, supervise and evaluate subordinates and their work as assigned.
Recognizes, analyzes and takes appropriate action for error conditions and system failures; resets equipment and recovers jobs in the event of a system or hardware failure; performs routine maintenance on terminals and associated equipment.
Keeps accurate records; prepares routine reports; maintains magnetic tape file libraries; does quality control and distribution of computer printed output.
Sets up and may control data for specific operations; uses job control language; performs job scheduling and job set-up; prepares operation run instructions; takes action to correct inefficient modes of operation, or makes recommendations for appropriate changes.
May monitor a telecommunication system; takes normal corrective action in the event of failure and/or notifies the responsible persons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years operating a computer and peripheral data processing equipment other than personal computers.
KNOWLEDGE
Principles and practices of supervision and training; function, operation and use of computer console, disk and tape drives and peripherals; principles and practices of data processing; function, and use of operating system software and job control language.
ABILITY
Operate computer and associated components; train, supervise and evaluate staff; organize work, set priorities and prepare schedules; set up and run jobs; respond to messages from console; recognize problems and take appropriate actions; follow oral and written operational procedures and flow charts; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; organize data.
