Under general supervision, performs responsible marketing assignments for various promotions and marketing of park services, facilities and programs; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this single position class is responsible for the development and implementation of marketing plans for a variety of programs to promote the use of County Parks. Direction is received from the Parks and Recreation Division.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Designs and develops a parks' marketing plan to encourage use of County parks; develops and updates mailing lists, media catalogs, and sponsor lists; participates in estimating expenditures for budgeting, and make budget recommendations related to marketing activities; may recommend marketing policies and procedures.
Plans, coordinates and implements special events and programs within the parks; recruits sponsors, volunteers, and other participants; may direct other park staff in their participation in these programs; and may evaluate program effectiveness.
May develop and maintain a speakers bureau for parks facilities and activities; arranges and participates in presentations to schools, clubs, and other interested groups.
Under supervision, coordinates the preparation and distribution of department press releases, public service announcements, advertising flyers, brochures; and other departmental marketing information; attends meetings to develop promotional ideas and solicit contributions.
Coordinates and participates in tours of parks facilities; and other special projects assigned.
Researches and interprets laws, ordinances, and policies that may apply to programs and events; recommends alternative approaches as appropriate.
Coordinates the public relations activities of the Parks and Recreation Division; develops an annual strategic plan for marketing activities based on objectives provided by the Parks and Recreation Division.
Assists in grant application and acquisition.
Develops customer surveys, recognition programs, newsletters, brochures, and works with concessionaires to improve service and revenues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major in business or public administration, marketing, environmental resources, park or recreation management, public relations, communications, or related field.
Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible work experience, performing marketing, promotions, or public relations activities.
License: Possession of valid California Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE
Park and recreation management principles; park marketing and promotion techniques; principles and practices of public relations; principles of management and organization; effective communication techniques, public relations techniques; advertising principles and practices; statistical gathering; presentations principles and practices; and relevant computer hardware and software.

Effectively market various aspects of services provided by the Parks and Recreation Division; plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate marketing program activities; read, understand, interpret and apply laws, ordinances, policies; express self clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; coordinate activities with several diverse groups; establish and maintain effective working relations; lead and direct others; operate business machines and computers to perform applicable work.
