Under immediate supervision, performs entry level nutritional education and assistance for individuals and groups qualified in the Public Health WIC Program; performs routine technical and administrative support services; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level in the WIC Nutrition Assistant series. An incumbent in this class is trained to and performs assigned duties under close supervision. This class is distinguished from the WIC Nutrition Assistant II in that the latter class is the certified level.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Learns and assists in interviewing, gathering and assembling related information to determine client eligibility; learns to maintain appropriate records and files; schedules appointments; places and receives calls.
Assists in verifying information obtained from client; enters client information into database; ensures that information is recorded accurately and completely.
Learns to prepare food instruments for eligible clients.
Participates in departmental training programs; learns information on nutrition topics which include the food groups, nutrients, dietary needs, food preparation and meal balancing.
Learns information on health related topics which may include anemia, lead poisoning prevention, food safety, breastfeeding, and nutrition.
May present and assist in presenting nutrition education classes to WIC clients; may participate in outreach activities in the community.
Observes and applies basic interview techniques and methods.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: One year of general clerical or office technical work.
Special Requirement: Ability to obtain a WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification issued by the State of California Department of Health Services WIC Supplemental Nutrition Branch. Certification is typically achieved within 12 to 18 months of hire.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license if required by nature of assignment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility-Frequent operation of a data entry device, repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking; occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting; Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Constant public contact; Special Requirements-May require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime; Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
