Under general direction, plans, coordinates and oversees the operations of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Chaplaincy program; provides support to law enforcement officers by assisting in community relations; and does related or other work in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single incumbent, civilian, non-peace officer class in the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. An incumbent in this class is responsible for administrative operations/activities associated with the Chaplaincy program. This is a technical, non-supervisory position whose primary duties are assigned by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the daily operation and administration of the Sheriff’s Office Chaplaincy program.
Develops and maintains programmatic policies and procedures; manages chaplain roster, schedules and ensures coverage plans to meet the program needs; monitors program effectiveness by gathering and compiling program statistics and records; regularly updates Sheriff’s Office through presentation and status reports.
Serves as liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and community organizations or individuals; performs public relations activities as a program representative, makes program-related presentations to the general public.
Develops training curriculum and conducts volunteer orientations and special training for chaplain program; Prepares and conducts technical training for volunteer chaplains, community groups and others, as assigned; serves as a lead resource for volunteer chaplains.
May assist law enforcement officials in making notifications to family members of Sheriff’s personnel and the general public relating to the circumstances surrounding serious injury or death.
Participates in community networking activities to increase program awareness and accessibility.
May provide spiritual support and/or counseling to families and community members as needed; provide referral services to families as requested.
May act as a chaplain as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses and Certificates: The Chaplaincy Coordinator (e.g. pastor, minister, priest, rabbi, imam) is a leader in good standing within their spiritual/faith institution or organization. Ideal candidates are ordained, licensed, or commissioned within their respective faith system and/or possess verifiable experience coordinating or administering ministerial programs.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE
General office practices and procedures; personal computer systems and general office computer software; fundamental public relations techniques; basic filing and recordkeeping systems; standard language mechanics; standard correspondence and report formats; providing spiritual care support to a diverse multi-cultural and multi-faith population.
ABILITY
Utilize standard office procedures and equipment; operate computers and related software; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively with others in emotionally charged and sensitive situations; maintain confidentiality; write clearly and legibly; perform basic arithmetical operations; match names and numbers; consult with religious leaders of other faith traditions.
