Under general supervision, performs limited protective work in guarding County Courthouse buildings and property; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent of this class is responsible for performing sentry work to safeguard a variety of County Courthouse property from damage or loss. The incumbent is required to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Patrols assigned areas to detect fires, trespassers, water leaks and malfunctioning mechanical equipment or any other danger of loss or damage to property; ensures that lights are on or off as required and that entrances or exits are properly locked; monitors and operates alarm systems, video security monitors and some building mechanical equipment; may request unauthorized persons to leave county premises; may operate weapons screening equipment and keep prohibited items out of County facilities.
Reports all suspected disturbances which require assistance in handling to authorized persons; calls law enforcement agencies as necessary.
Maintains activity log detailing any occurrences; prepares reports as necessary.
Raises and lowers flags from installed standards.
Answers assigned telephone; gives routine information to the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Experience: One year in law enforcement, security guard work or law enforcement in the military.
KNOWLEDGE
Procedures in buildings and grounds security; building safety and fire protection procedures; basic public relations.
ABILITY
Follow oral and written instructions and procedures; maintain legible tour logs; learn rules and regulations pertaining to admissions and exits; learn the areas patrolled; deal effectively with the general public in a variety of sensitive work situations.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility-Frequently sitting for long periods; occasionally standing for long periods, walking pushing/pulling bending/squatting and climbing stairs may be required; Lifting-Frequently lifting 5 pounds or less; occasionally restraining, lifting turning of heavy objects or people; Vision-Constantly having good overall vision; frequently displaying hand-eye coordination and depth perception; occasionally being able to read and good close-up work, field of vision/peripheral and color perception; Dexterity-Normal dexterity, frequently writing and grasping; occasionally holding and reaching; Hearing/Talking-Frequently hearing and talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequently requiring concentration; occasionally involved in public contact and decision making; Conditions-Constantly requires working weekend/nights or evening work.
