Under general supervision, performs varied case management work for inmates in the San Joaquin County Custody Division; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this single position class is responsible for providing various case management duties for inmates in a variety of custody settings within the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Reviews, evaluates, and responds to requests for services for inmates received by Housing Officers, Education and General Library staff; Administrative Staff, family members, and other agencies such as Public Defender, Child Protective Services, Human Services Agency, Religious Community, Medical, Hospital, and Institutional staff.
Conducts one-to-one on site visits with inmates in South Jail, Jail Core and Honor Farm; interview inmates to assess individual requests for services; researches, evaluates, and develops a realistic plan to meet to inmates requests.
Links inmates with the appropriate services; acts as a community resource to provide inmate/family with information regarding services and program availability; coordinates service plan with supervisor, housing officer, family, and other agencies if necessary.
Attends and participates in staff meetings and training seminars; assists in the recruitment of volunteers; may facilitate volunteer workshops.
Maintains case records, reports, and correspondence; prepares and maintains database of inmate issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License: Valid California Class C driver's license.
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social or behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or related field.
Experience: One year of experience in a custody setting providing counseling or social services to inmates or the equivalent of one year of an intensive internship in a custody setting providing services to inmates.
Substitution: One year of experience in a custody setting providing services to inmates may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years.
KNOWLEDGE
Principles and techniques of social casework; principles of interviewing; principles of report writing; community resources for inmates and inmate families; basic principles of human behavior; multi-cultural familiarity.

Assess inmates' needs; establish rapport with inmates and inmate family members; apply casework skills and knowledge to meet goals; understand relevant laws, rules and regulations as they pertain to a custody environment; communicate effectively orally, and in writing; follow custody policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
