DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs supervisory and program development duties in the Inmate Recreation Program of the Sheriff's Department; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this single position class is responsible for developing and supervising recreation programs for inmates in the County's adult custody facilities. Direction and supervision is provided by the Inmate Program Coordinator.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Plans, develops, implements, and supervises a variety of recreation activities and programs for inmates in the County's custody facilities.
  • Reviews, evaluates and approves proposed programs and objectives; analyzes existing programs in relation to inmate needs and State requirements.
  • Plans, and supervises non-competitive and competitive recreation activities for inmates; instructs inmates in all phases of recreational activities provided by the custody facility.
  • Maintains security of participants as well as the facility and equipment; enforces safety procedures; may administer first aid as required.
  • Acts as liaison between the Sheriff's Department, volunteers, and the general public regarding the Custody Recreation Program; recruits and supervises volunteers, interns, and others working in the Custody Recreation Program.
  • Prepares and administers the budget for the Custody Recreation Program.
  • Maintains financial, personnel, and other program records and reports; prepares correspondence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, social science, or a closely related field.

Experience: One-year experience leading a variety of recreational, or educational athletic activities.

Substitution: Additional-qualifying experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to two years.

License: Possession of a valid California Drivers' license.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic principles of recreation leadership; rules and equipment utilized in recreation programs and activities; safety practices and procedures; basic first aid; public relations techniques; record keeping; language mechanics.

ABILITY

Evaluate and develop recreation programs; instruct and direct a variety of recreation activities; ensure safety and security of participants and equipment; maintain records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical/Mental Requirements: Mobility- Constant walking and standing; frequent twisting; occasional sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, driving, operation of a data entry device, pushing/pulling, and kneeling. Lifting - Frequently 10 pounds or less; occasionally 10 to 45 pounds. Visual Requirements- Constant overall vision, eye-hand coordination, field of vision/peripheral. Dexterity-Normal dexterity with frequent holding and reaching; occasional writing, grasping, and repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking- Constant hearing normal speech, talking in person. Emotional/Psychological Factors- Frequent exposure to emergency situations; decision making, concentration, occasional exposure to trauma and contact with hostile individuals; Environmental Conditions- Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, cold/heat (indoor and outdoor); occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
