Under direction, performs responsible managerial work overseeing the operation of the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department Auto Body Shop including training and instructing inmates in the technical work of the shop, and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this class is responsible for managing the administrative and technical operations of the Sheriff's Auto Body Shop and providing technical training and job placement to inmate participants.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Provides technical training to inmate participants in collision repair, prepping, body repair, detailing and painting of vehicles.
Supervises inmate participants; selects inmates participants to participate in the program; evaluates their progress in auto bodywork; plans, schedules and coordinates the work to accomplish department goals and maximize revenue.
Provides technical assistance in the preparation, collision repair, body repair, detailing and painting of vehicles.
Serves as a customer liaison to the County Motor Pool local municipalities and other user agencies; analyzes and advises on current and future auto body repair and maintenance needs.
Develops and administers the technical instruction program encompassing all aspects of body repair work; provides technical instruction to inmate crews of up to 20 inmates.
Develops and maintains all purchasing, inventory, quality control, pricing, and billing systems; maintains financial accounting of all revenues and expenditures to assist Sheriff's administrative staff with planning for expansion and the preparing the budget.
Establishes and maintains technical certification with equipment and material vendors.
Establishes and maintains relationships with Auto Body businesses and placement agencies in order to make and/ or facilitate placement of inmate participants upon release.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Six years of journey level experience in performing auto body repair work involving estimating, prepping, body repair, detailing, and painting of vehicles. Three years of the required experience must be at a supervisory level.
Certificate: Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) Certification.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE
Techniques and practices of general auto body repair, including painting, estimating, prepping and detailing; principles of supervision and training; principles of human behavior; customer service practices; recordkeeping and inventory systems; financial recordkeeping; basic arithmetic; business practices and marketing techniques common to the Auto Body industry.

Plan, schedule and coordinate the work of inmates; train and instruct on auto body repair, painting, detailing, and estimating; estimate repair costs; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain historical business record in order to assist in business and marketing decisions.
