Under immediate supervision, performs general prisoner custody, patrol, investigation and other routine law enforcement work; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the Deputy Sheriff series. Employees of this class are responsible for following clearly established procedures in receiving prisoners, maintaining discipline and preventing escapes. Employees also receive training in other aspects of general law enforcement work with emphasis placed on community-based policing concepts and collaborative problem solving.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Receives prisoners from law enforcement officers for detention in County jail and honor farm; obtain information from prisoners; receives and records prisoners’ personal property; searches, photographs and fingerprints prisoners and assigns them to cells.
Supervises prisoners eating, bathing, recreation, and other daily activities; supervises prisoner counseling, work rehabilitation and therapy programs.
Releases prisoners from jail on proper authorization; returns prisoner’s clothing and other personal property; receives cash and surety bail bonds; reviews bonds for correctness and legality before releasing prisoners.
Collects and dispenses prisoner clothing.
Examines packages, letters, and other articles coming into the jail for the prisoners; insures that all items conform to established policy; removes contraband.
Administers first aid for minor injuries; dispenses medicine as prescribed by physicians; arranges for medical treatment.
Maintains records and reports of prisoner activities and conduct.
In a training capacity, participates in patrolling County areas, enforcing laws, and responding to reports of law violation. Interacts with and develops and maintains positive relations with the public to prevent and resolve issues, gain compliance, and build trust.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of a G.E.D. test (scores must meet level established by Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission).
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (1) Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment; (2) Meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code; (3) Pass background investigation conducted by Sheriff’s Department; (4) Meet physical standards established for safety members.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic social aspects of law enforcement; general human behavior; public relations principles; language usage and mechanics; first aid.
ABILITY
Learn principles and methods used in the control and custody of prisoners and conflict de-escalation; learn principles and methods of community-based policing used in general law enforcement; supervise activities of individuals in custody; proactively solve problems; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain routine records and reports; read and understand legal and other job related material; work effectively with prisoners, fellow officers, public officials and general public.
