DEFINITION

Under general supervision assists in the preparation and implementation of public health educational programs and services and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the skilled, sub-professional level in the Health Education series. Employees in this class primarily assist Public Health Educators and other professional staff in meeting the specified health education needs of various areas of the public health agency and preparing appropriate educational materials

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Participates and assists in planning, organizing and conducting meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences to promote public health awareness and public health programs; assists in preparing exhibits, posters, graphics and other public display material.

  • Researches data and prepares copy for bulletins, pamphlets, periodicals and other written informational media.

  • Prepares new releases and other special features on public health topics for public presentation; may assist in coordinating informational programs and materials with the various news media.

  • Coordinates and maintains contacts with various community agencies and groups to develop educational information and promotion concerning available public health programs and services and their utilization; assists agencies and groups in developing internal public health related programs and projects.

  • Provides in-service training and technical educational assistance to agency staff and personnel of schools and other public agencies; prepares and delivers verbal presentations.

  • Assists in recruiting, training and monitoring program providers.

  • Prepares and maintains technical records and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health, public health education, or the social or behavioral science.

Experience:  One year of work experience comparable to that of a Public Health Education Assistant I in San Joaquin County. 

AND

License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE

Principles and practices of public health education; methods of preparing and disseminating public education materials; organization and methods of utilizing the news media; general functions, goals, issues, and programs of a public health agency; community organization and resources; principles and practices of data gathering, analysis and presentation; language mechanics; basic principles of public relations; basic training and educational theory; basic health problems and needs of the community.

ABILITY

Assist in preparing and implementing public health educational programs and services; express self effectively orally including making public presentations; express self effectively in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff and wide variety of community organizations and the general public.
