This is a temporary position in the Parks and Recreation Division of the Facilities Management Department. Under supervision, coordinates and supervises the activities of Micke Grove Zoo Critter Corral and youth volunteer programs; and does related or other work as required.
This position supervises, monitors, and maintains the seasonal display of domesticated animals, and coordinates youth volunteer programs. Employees provide daily animal care, facility maintenance, and interpretation of park rules and regulations.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, organizes, assigns, and coordinates teen volunteer work schedules, including animal feeding, cleaning animal pens, and exercising animals; maintains facilities; maintains work schedules.
Supervises and trains teen volunteers in the proper handling of animals, and to provide animal care.
Maintains volunteer records, Critter Corral signage, and daily visitor use records.
Maintains and makes repairs to Critter Corral as needed; ensures work is done correctly; identifies and solves problems.
Observes and examines animals for signs of illness, injury, nervousness, or unnatural behavior, and reports illness, disease or injury.
Communicates with zoo management on the condition of equipment and animals; makes request for supplies.
Monitors public and feed storage areas to ensure cleanliness and safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Six months paid or volunteer experience as a program leader, counselor, teacher, or assistant working with groups in an educational, recreational or other social program. Completed coursework in animal husbandry, zoology, animal science, or working in a farm environment is desirable.
Substitution: Completion of 30 semester units at an accredited college or university including at least six semester units in the social, behavioral, or environmental sciences, may substitute for the above-required experience.
Special Requirement: Must pass fingerprinting as mandated by state law. California state law requires all public recreation program employees to submit to fingerprinting for the purpose of obtaining a summary of criminal convictions.
KNOWLEDGE
Various domesticated animals; basic public relations principles; basic computer and modern office automation technology; record keeping; principles and practices of public relations; basic supervision and coordination of volunteer programs.
ABILITY
Supervise, assign, schedule, and train volunteers; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; maintain records; operate computers and standard office equipment; read and interpret park rules and regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.
