Under immediate supervision, learns to perform diagnostic and therapeutic therapy techniques for a variety of disabling conditions.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a temporary license applicant position. An employee in this position learns to perform a variety of physical therapy services, including patient assessment, planning, treatment, related documentation, and communication. Incumbents work under the direct and immediate supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Conducts physical therapy evaluations and interprets findings.
Plans and implements physical therapeutic treatments for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
Records information on patient charts, maintains accurate records, and prepares written reports.
Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; participates in in-service and staff development class.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from a Physical Therapy Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and completion of a clinical internship in physical therapy; OR completion of a program that has been deemed acceptable by the state board as an approved program.
Special Requirement: Possess official confirmation from the Physical Therapy Board of California (PTBOC) authorizing physical therapist license applicant status. Incumbents must successfully pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) and the California Law Examination (CLE) within one year from the date of the original notice to appear for the examination. Failure to successfully pass both examinations within one year of employment will result in release from employment.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license if required by the nature of the assignment.
KNOWLEDGE
Current physical therapy theory, principles, methods, and equipment used in physical therapy; anatomy and physiology; basic principles of psychology and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions; medical terminology; basic medical record keeping; basic computer operations, including pertinent software.
ABILITY
Organize and implement physical therapy treatment programs; conduct individual and group treatment programs; interpret and adapt physician’s orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, parents, caregivers, staff, and others; utilize computers and office automation equipment; complete accurate medical records and/or charts.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility – operation of a data entry device; frequent standing for long periods; constant walking; occasional pushing/pulling; frequent bending/squatting; Lifting – occasional lifting of 5 to 50 pounds; restraining, lifting/turning, transferring people; Vision – frequent color perception; occasional eye/hand coordination, peripheral vision and depth perception; frequent reading; Dexterity – frequent holding and occasional repetitive motion; frequent reaching, grasping and writing; occasional manual operation of equipment and hand tools Hearing/Talking – constant hearing normal speech, talking in person, talking on the telephone; frequent hearing on the telephone and hearing faint sounds. Special Requirements – may require occasional overtime; may require weekend or evening work; Emotional/Psychological – occasional emergency situations; occasional exposure to trauma, grief and death; occasional exposure to depression and psychiatric disorders in patients, constant public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Environmental – occasional exposure to noise; may be exposed to varied indoor temperatures, occasional exposure to cleaning agents.
