Under supervision, performs non-professional nursing work in caring for the sick and disabled; and does related or other work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This class is exempt from the Civil Service System and provides for the temporary employment of registered nurse students. An employee in this class is responsible for following clearly established procedures in assisting licensed and professional nursing and medical staff in patient care. Incumbents may not administer medication buy may perform more technical procedures as training and experience permit. Work is closely supervised by professional nursing or medical staff and does not require licensing.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Performs routine work in the care of patients, including making beds, changing linens, giving baths and rubs, caring for incontinent patients lifting, moving and transporting patients, personal and oral hygiene of patients and expiration care; cars for personal effects of patients.
Measures and records intake and output of foods and fluids as directed; collects urine, stool and sputum specimens; tests urine and records results; may give nonmedicated enemas; may perform more technical procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Assists professional staff in performing tests, procedures and examinations of patients; assists in monitoring patients in critical care units.
Serves trays, feeds patients, and removes trays.
Observes patients; takes and records observations accurately, including vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
Maintains patient unit in a neat and clean manner; maintains supplies; removes soiled linen and restocks supplies.
Keeps routine records and reports.
Participates in staff development training programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER
Education: Current enrollment in the fourth and final semester of an approved two-year registered nurse curriculum or in subsequent semesters of a registered nurse baccalaureate program with a grade average of “C” or better.
OR II
Education: Current enrollment in the third semester of an approved Registered Nurse curriculum with a grade average of “C” or better.
Experience: Six months performing duties equivalent to those of a nursing aide in an acute care facility.
OR III
Education: Current enrollment in the second semester of an approved Registered Nurse curriculum with a grade average of “C” or better.
Experience: One year performing duties equivalent to those of a nursing aide in an acute care facility.
OR IV
Education: Current enrollment in the first semester of an approved Registered Nurse curriculum with a grade average of “C” or better.
Experience: Eighteen months performing duties equivalent to those of a nursing aide in an acute care facility.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic arithmetic; basic hygiene and health standards; basic institutional safety procedures, including safe lifting techniques; basic hospital sanitation practices; names, uses and care of patient care supplies; behavior of patients.
ABILITY
Work well with others; attend to the personal needs of the physically and mentally ill; deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully; follow oral and written instructions in exact detail; lift and move patients.
