CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
A supervisory-level class that assists the SIP Coordinator with supervising students in activities that provide substance abuse peer education services and in maintaining program records. The incumbent works under the immediate supervision of the SIP Coordinator.

Obtains participant background information; provides program participants with referral information; assists the SIP Coordinator in scheduling, payroll duties and conducting evaluations.
Supervises and monitors presentations made to community groups and schools; may confer with senior counselors on information obtained during discussions with program participants.
Assists in and/or conducts educational sessions pertaining to substance abuse, family roles, communication skills, ethnic and cultural diversity, and other youth-oriented issues.
Transports program participants to and from program activities.
Participates in SIP community projects and attends inservice training sessions and monthly meetings. Attends San Joaquin County Prevention and Treatment Services staff meetings.

KNOWLEDGE
Substance abuse prevention methods; youth development; needs, problems, attitudes and behavior patterns of persons suffering from alcohol and/or chemical dependency; basic principles of human behavior and cultural development; dealing with peer pressure; building self-esteem; alternative activities to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; punctuation, spelling and grammar.
ABILITY
Supervise, lead and assist in training students; organize and present information to groups; maintain alcohol, tobacco and other drug-free lifestyles as per the SIP program philosophy; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of individuals; administer routine first aid.
